About this file
This is a technical specifications document for aggregates used in earthwork, prepared by Herbert, Rowland & Grubic, Inc. for the Weaverland Valley Authority's North Earl Street Low Pressure Sanitary Sewer Extension Project (Project No. 011361.0461) in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. The specification details requirements for coarse aggregate materials including PennDOT 2A, AASHTO No. 57, AASHTO No. 8, AASHTO No. 3, and Select Granular Material (2RC), as well as fine aggregate materials such as Bituminous Concrete Sand Type B, Mortar Sand, Filler Type C, and other sieve-graded materials conforming to PennDOT standards. All aggregate materials must originate from a single source approved by PennDOT and must meet specifications outlined in PennDOT Publication 408. Stockpiling requirements mandate that materials be stored on-site in sufficient quantities to meet project schedules, with different aggregate types separated by dividers or stockpiled individually to prevent mixing, and surface water directed away from stockpile sites to prevent erosion or deterioration.
The specification establishes quality assurance requirements referencing PennDOT Publication 408 and various AASHTO and ASTM standards for testing and classification, including sieve analysis, compaction characteristics, and soil classification methods. Contractors must submit 10-pound samples of each fill material type in air-tight containers to the testing laboratory when required by the engineer, provide names of imported material suppliers, and furnish manufacturer's certificates certifying that products meet or exceed specified requirements. Upon project completion, all stockpiles must be removed and the site left in clean and neat condition with surface grading to prevent standing water. The document references related sections including Section 31 23 16.13 for trenching and Section 01 33 00 for submittal procedures, establishing this as part of a comprehensive construction specification framework for the sanitary sewer extension project.
