About this file

This is a parent survey letter from the South Carolina Department of Education, under State Superintendent Molly M. Spearman, announcing a statewide parent opinion survey initiative. The survey targets parents with children in selected grades across South Carolina's public schools and aims to measure parent satisfaction and involvement. Parents are instructed to complete the survey for each child in a surveyed grade, with responses kept anonymous and confidential. School administrators will receive only aggregate summary data. The survey takes approximately ten to fifteen minutes to complete and consists of statement-response items requiring respondents to select from provided choices. Completed surveys must be returned to schools by Friday, March 20, 2020, or mailed to the Office of Research and Data Analysis by March 27, 2020. Survey results will be incorporated into individual school annual report cards.

The survey results are intended to help schools identify strategies to improve parent engagement and develop better partnerships with families. No pricing information, contract terms, set-asides, or funding details are specified in this communication. The letter emphasizes that parents may omit any items they are uncomfortable answering and encourages candid responses to support the Department of Education's school improvement efforts.

Dear Parent:

The South Carolina Department of Education is conducting a survey to ask parents their opinions about the public schools their children attend. All parents in South Carolina who have children in selected grades are being asked to complete this survey. If you have children in more than one of the grades being surveyed, you will be asked to complete this survey for each child. The results will be included in the school’s annual report card. Your answers will be anonymous and confidential. School administrators will receive only a summary of the answers given by parents.

The goal of the parent survey is to measure how parents feel about their child’s school. Your opinions are very important in helping us learn more about parent involvement in South Carolina. Your responses also will help schools identify better ways to work with parents. If you are uncomfortable responding to any items on the survey, you may omit those items.

The survey will take about ten to fifteen minutes to complete. Please read each statement and choose the best response from the choices given. As you read each statement, try to focus on the entire year and not just on recent or isolated events. Mark your choice by darkening the appropriate circle. Do not staple or fold the form. Return the completed survey to the envelope.

Seal and return the envelope to the school by Friday, March 20, 2020. If you prefer, you can mail the completed survey to the Department of Education by March 27 at the address below.
