RADON EXPLANATORY NOTES
The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has established a radon action level of 4.0 picoCuries per liter (pCi/L). Occupied buildings with radon concentrations less than 4.0 pCi/L do not require radon mitigation; un-occupied buildings, or those buildings which are occupied only infrequently for brief periods of time, also do not require radon mitigation. Occupied buildings with radon concentrations greater than
4.0 pCi/L require radon mitigation and verification of radon reductions as soon as possible, with priority given to dormitories and student recreation buildings. Occupied buildings with radon concentrations greater than 20.0 pCi/L should be considered significant radon exposure hazards, and priority for mitigation should be given to buildings with these highly elevated radon concentrations.
Radon mitigation techniques include: (1) adjustment of the building HVAC system to create a positive pressure within the building; (2) sealing of foundation wall cracks, penetrations, or other openings;
(3) sealing crawlspace openings and sump pits; (4) installing an active subslab depressurization (ASD) system.

The center has a single primary-metered overhead utility feeder, a central pad-mounted sectionalizing enclosure and a closed-loop configuration of 500 kVA, 120/208V primary transformers. One smaller primary transformer, having two feeders brought directly from the sectionalizing enclosure, provides power for engine block heater outlets and site lighting. A pole-mounted fused cutout switch is located at the center's entrance pole, where primary power transitions to underground. The primary transformers have a primary oil-filled integral disconnect and enclosed secondary main circuit breaker section. Load-break elbows provide primary cable terminations (in and out), both at the transformers and at the sectionalizing enclosure. Building and zone metering is provided on equipment racks beside respective primary transformers. A 300 kW, Caterpillar Model 3408B, natural gas (with standby LPG) generator is located in Warehouse Building 3. The 480V backup power is distributed from a 500A shunt-trip generator main breaker, through an underground open-loop configuration having three key-interlocked tie breakers. The backup power loop is tapped from 480V disconnects, located at site equipment racks, serving dry-type step-down transformers (480V closed-delta primary - 120/208V, 3 Ph, 4 W secondary) and 120/208V automatic transfer switches within building mechanical rooms. No buildings use 480/277V for other than feeding the backup power step-down transformers. A generator and automatic transfer switch status indication panel is located at the security office, Building 1.
