About this file
This is a technical memorandum transmitting soil testing results for Heart Butte Dam, a Pick-Sloan Missouri Basin Program project in North Dakota. The document summarizes laboratory testing conducted by the Bureau of Reclamation's Technical Service Center on soil materials collected from the dam's conduit and borrow areas.
Conduit material collected from Heart Butte Dam was classified as non-plastic SM (silty sand) to SP-SM (poorly graded sand with silt). Testing revealed an internal friction angle of 39.4 degrees and cohesion of 292 pounds per square feet. Some gravel samples exhibited strong reactions to hydrochloric acid. X-ray diffraction analysis identified primarily quartz and clay minerals (smectite and illite). Borrow material from three test pits was classified as SM (silty sand), with test pit TP-18-1 yielding a maximum dry unit weight of 130.5 pounds per cubic feet and optimum water content of 11.2 percent. The testing program included water content, dry unit weight, physical properties, direct shear, HCl reaction, and X-ray diffraction analyses, with microscopic photography also performed. The memorandum directs questions and requests for hard copies to Blake Armstrong at the Bureau of Reclamation's Denver facility.

Subject: Transmittal of TM No. 8530-2018-54: Results of Soil Testing on Heart Butte Dam
Conduit Material; Pick-Sloan Missouri basin Program, Heart Butte Dam, ND
Material was collected the conduit at Heart Butte Dam and delivered to the Technical Service
Center’s (TSC) Concrete, Geotechnical, and Structural Laboratory (CGSL). The following tests were conducted on this material: water content, dry unit weight, physical properties, direct shear, reaction to HCl, and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Microscopic photos were also taken.
Borrow material was collected from three test pits at Heart Butte Dam and delivered to the
TSC’s CGSL. Material was tested for physical properties, and one sample was tested for maximum dry unit weight and optimum water content.
Conduit material was non-plastic SM – silty sand to SP-SM – poorly graded sand with silt.
Some gravel samples had strong reactions to HCl. Direct shear test results indicated an internal friction angle of 39.4° and cohesion of 292 pounds per square feet (psf). XRD analysis indicated mainly quartz and clays (smectite and illite).
Borrow material was classified as SM – silty sand. Maximum dry unit weight and optimum water content in test pit TP-18-1 was equal to 130.5 pounds per cubic feet (pcf) and 11.2 %, respectively.

2) Tube Density determinations will be performed on intact material in tubes before preparation of direct shear specimens
3) Some samples have limited amount of material. Physical property testing will be performed with the following priority: gradation, Atterberg limits, hydrometer, specific gravity.

Heart Butte Samples: BADS-01, -02, -03, and -04 Semi-Quantitative Weight Percent Mineralogy and Clay Mineral Identification by XRD Audrey Rager July 30, 2018
Semi-Quantitative Weight Percent Mineralogy by X-Ray Diffraction
The identification of minerals contained in four (4) samples from Heart Butte, were obtained by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) analysis. The samples were crushed in a Fritsch mortar grinder pulverisette 2 from which the <45 m size fraction was subject to XRD analysis. The analyses were carried out in a powder diffractometer using Cu radiation (45kV,40mA). No elemental data were provided for the three sand samples.
X-ray diffraction scans were collected on a PANalytical X’Pert Pro MPD diffractometer with Bragg Bertano optics using copper radiation. Scans were collected from 4 to 80 degrees two-theta at a rate of 1 degree per minute.
Identification of mineral phases was performed using Material Data Inc. (MDI) Jade (V 9.6) search-match software using the ICDD’s “2014 PDF-4” and National Institute Standards and Technology “FIZ/NIST Inorganic ICSD” databases. Semi-quantitative mineral estimates were calculated using MDI Whole Pattern Fit software which simultaneously calculates a whole pattern fit and a Rietveld refinement of the minerals. Clay minerals were identified according to procedures outlined in U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 01-041.
The samples were provided to the Petro Lab in plastic sample bags with descriptions (Table 1). Samples ID numbers were assigned to the four samples as shown in Table 1.
