C.1 BACKGROUND
The George Washington Memorial Parkway (GWMP) was designed for recreational driving that runs along the Potomac
River through the two states of Virginia and Maryland, as well as the District of Columbia. The GWMP is dotted with memorials and places with nationally significant history, including The Alexandria Waterfront, Fort Hunt, Jones Point
Lighthouse, Memorial Bridge and Avenue and US Marine Corps War Memorial.
While the GWMP serves as link between sites that commemorate important episodes in American history, it also serves to preserve and protect the landscape and natural shoreline of the Potomac River while offering magnificent views of
Washington, D.C. and the Great Falls of the Potomac. The GWMP makes up approximately 4,580 acres of land that is home to at least 81 plants and animals that are considered rare, threatened or endangered in Virginia and Maryland. The site includes several miles of hiking trails, including the Mount Vernon Trail which is 18 mile multi-use trail that stretches from George Washington Mount Vernon Estate to Theodore Roosevelt Island.
