About this file
This document outlines guidelines for manhole numbering at Fort Wadsworth in New York. The National Park Service has developed a numbering scheme for all storm and sewer structures using prefixes of STMH and SSMH, respectively. Numbers are assigned by street in increments beginning from New York Avenue, with the second digit differentiating parallel lines when needed. New manholes between existing structures will take consecutive letter designations. Existing numbers will be maintained for non-abandoned infrastructure.
The related federal contract opportunity is a two-phase design-build solicitation for rehabilitation of water, wastewater and stormwater utility systems at Fort Wadsworth. Phase 1 proposals are due by August 11th, 2023 and do not require pricing. The finalized Program of Requirements will be provided in Phase 2. The solicitation is issued by the National Park Service National Office within the Department of the Interior.

GUIDELINES FOR MANHOLE (MH) NUMBERING AT FORT WADSWORTH
This document details the manhole (MH) numbering scheme developed by Stantec Consulting for the National Park Service at Fort Wadsworth in the Gateway National Recreation Area.
1. For all storm structures, the notation used is STMH. For all sewer structures, the notation used is
SSMH.
2. The first digit (hundreds) of the numbering system is assigned by street, as detailed in the table below.
Number Series Street Name
000 New York Avenue
100 Battery Road
200 Tompkins Street
300 Hudson Road
400 Drum Road
500 Mont Sec Avenue
600 Coast Guard Drive
700 USS North Carolina Road
800 Marshall Road
900 Miscellaneous off New York Avenue
Additional numbering series can be added to this guideline as required for new infrastructure.
3. The second two digits (tens and ones) increase in a consistent direction, typically out from New York Avenue. Numbers can be skipped such that the second digit (tens) of the numbering system differentiates a parallel or adjacent line.
Example: The storm line on Tompkins Street is in the 200 series. The storm line entering the Visitor Center parking lot starts in the 220 series.
4. For new MHs between two existing MHs, letters starting with “A” will be added to the end of the existing MH numbers.
5. Existing numbering, where available, shall be maintained until the infrastructure is abandoned.
