Additional Geotechnical Investigation Report
Timpanogos Cave Visitor Facility
American Fork, Utah
IDIQ Contract P14PC00007
Terracon Project No. C4155339
Dear Mr. McDonald:
This letter report is to present the results of our recent drilling investigation in the slope behind the existing Visitor Center. This work has been conducted in accordance with the referenced
NPS Task Order and our associated discussions and correspondence. This additional investigation was conducted in order to provide basic characterization of the slope, the toe of which is to be excavated to allow construction of a retention structure and rockfall barrier per the current project Plan. The investigation data is to assist in validating, or appropriately adjusting, the design concept and to provide prospective contractors with information regarding drilling conditions for use in project planning.
The drilling was completed over the three-day period of July 20 through July 21, 2016 and consisted of two sub-horizontal borings made from positions in front of the existing small retaining wall behind the Visitor Facility (See Site Location Map, Exhibit A-2, and photographs of the drilling, Exhibits A-5 through A-8, attached). The drilling was conducted by our subcontractor, Nicholson Construction Company of Salt Lake City using a limited access, crawler drill rig (Comacchio MC 8D with reticulating frame for difficult access) to advance borings into the slope for lengths of about 41 to 57 feet. The drilling was accomplished via
ODEX casing advance methods, which is a rotary-percussion, compressed air system similar to that expected for construction of the wall and rockfall retention features.
The borings were logged by our project geotechnical engineer based on cuttings return and drilling difficulty encountered. Since the drilling method cuts and pulverizes the materials encountered, only fine cuttings were returned to the surface for review. Therefore, drilling ease or difficulty, in conjunction with these cutting returns, was used to prepare the attached Logs of

TALUS ROCK FRAGMENTS WITH SAND AND SILT,
light tan to whitish pink, dense to very dense, quartzite fragments in cuttings, limited air return from ODEX system to drill head, lots of dust eminating from talus slope during drilling, larger cobbles and some silt very limited hammer action at 11.3 to 16.3 feet
QUARTZITE, white to pink, some oxidation, very difficult drilling, lots of hammer action to advance 5 foot sections, advancement rate decreased from 1.67 ft/min to 0.31 ft/min advanced inner rod only for remaining 5 foot distance at a rate of 0.22 ft/min
Boring Terminated at 41.3 Feet
Logged by M. Hoffmann Stratification lines are approximate. In-situ, the transition may be gradual.
