BLM Arctic District Office Surface Inspection

Fish Creek Legacy Well

N 70° 18.6462, W 151° 52.4071

By Melody Debenham

September 29, 2021

The Fish Creek legacy well is located in Section 15, Township 11 North, Range 1 East, Umiat

Meridian (Figure 1), approximately 25 miles west of Nuiqsut. Melody Debenham (BLM

Physical Scientist) and Mathew Ferderbar (BLM Soil Scientist) conducted a surface inspection on June 13, 2021.

The US Navy drilled the Fish Creek legacy well in 1949 to a depth of 7,020 feet. The site consisted of the well within a concrete cellar and pad with reinforced steel matting. The concrete, matting, and pilings were left in place, and there was surface debris present within 500 feet of the pad.

In March 2021, Olgoonik Construction Services performed plugging and abandonment activities at the well site and removed surface debris. Due to unanticipated conditions in the well, Olgoonik Construction Services could not complete the plugging and abandonment activities and the well was put into suspended status.

Photo 1 shows an aerial view of the site on June 13, 2021. There was a wooden platform with two green markers at the well location, and part of the concrete cellar is still visible (Photo 2).

There was a pile of gravel on the other side of the wooden platform (Photos 3 and 4). Debris present at the site included metal scraps, rebar, broken concrete, and wood (Photos 5 and 6).

Several wooden pilings were observed (Photos 7 and 8).
