About this file

This is a technical troubleshooting guide for hybrid electrical systems, specifically Section 5 electrical troubleshooting procedures for equipment at NIST's Gaithersburg, Maryland location under Order No. CT-1047. The document is proprietary material from Balcke-Durr Incorporated of Tampa, Florida and addresses diagnostic and remediation procedures for common equipment failures.

The guide provides systematic troubleshooting steps for three primary systems: fan motor failures, rollup door remote operation failures, and rollup door local operation failures. For fan motor issues, the document instructs technicians to verify motor starter power, check emergency stop status, inspect oil levels, and examine vibration trip activation. For rollup door failures affecting remote operation, procedures include checking safety edge bypass switches, inspecting door tracking and jamming, verifying circuit breakers and motor starter fusing, and testing control circuits. For local operation failures, the guide addresses relay and limit switch diagnostics. The document also covers partial door operation scenarios, including motor controller limit switch adjustments, mechanical damage inspection, voltage verification at devices, and controller power and enable signal verification. This troubleshooting resource serves as a reference document for maintenance and repair personnel addressing equipment malfunctions at the NIST facility.

Problem
Cause/Remedy
Fan motor does not start.
· Insure Motor starter in electrical building has power.

· Check to see if

· . E Stop is pressed

· Oil Level is Low.

· Vibration Trip has been activated

· Check Control circuit for Motor Starter

Fan motor trips.
· If Vibration Trip examine, motor, drive shaft and fan blades for proper operation

· If Oil Level Trip verify oil level at sight glass (make sure sight glass isolation valve is open)

· If oil level is low add oil, check for leakages.

· Check E stop someone may have shut down fan.

Rollup Door does not close/open remotely
· If one door opens but does not close, close safety edge bypass switch and try again.

· If one door will not move in either direction,

· Check to make sure door is not off track or jammed

· check circuit breaker in electrical room,

· check fusing in Roller Door Motor Starter,

· check C1 and C2 for operation.

· If neither door will move in either direction, check control circuits.

.Rollup Door does not close/open locally
· If door will move in one direction only.:

· check for bad relay.

· Check for bad limit switch in motor controller.

Roller door does not close/open fully but still moves in both directions
· You may be experiencing :

· Motor Controller limit switches need adjustment.

If it doesn’t work,
· Check if it’s been tagged out

· Check to see if there is mechanical damage

· Check to see if voltage is present at the device

· If not check to see if power is at output of controller

· if not check to see if controller has enable signal and input power
