Task Order Name: Little Snowies Mastication
Unit(s) Name: 6-1M, 6-2M, and 6-3M.
Location – 40 Miles NW of Roundup, MT Legal-T12 N., R21 E., Sec. 26, 27 and 35
Approximate Elevation – 4900-5200 feet Average Stand Age - 100-135 years
Average Aspect - SE Average Slope – 5-15%
Average Leave Tree Height – 55-75 feet Average Cut Tree Height – 15-40 feet
To the extent possible, complete between July and December to prevent ips beetle infestation.
Masticate at least 95 percent of trees up to 9 inch diameter at breast height.
• Spread chips/shreds of various sizes over 65% to 85% of the soil surface. Should not exceed 2 inches. If the chip depth criteria cannot be achieved, reduce the maximum diameter limit in that site-specific area to achieve chip criteria. Priority for tree mastication would be within 15
ft. of canopy dripline of trees greater than 18 inches diameter.
• If cut tree cannot be masticated without significant damage to adjacent leave trees (>9”) then the cut tree can remain uncut. Significant damage would be defined as greater than 25% physical damage to leave tree.
• Do not deposit chips/shreds on roadway or in ditches, stream channels, or areas that support surface water.
• Stump height would be less than 4 inches above the forest floor or natural obstacles.
• Avoid damaging isolated limber pine (5-needle) if possible
• Avoid damaging concentrated areas of shrubs.
• Ensure that large diameter, existing, coarse woody debris (2 logs/acre) remains on site to provide for soil productivity.
ALL OTHER CONSIDERATIONS:
(1) Minimize soil scarification and detrimental soil impacts to the extent possible.
(2) There is a barb-wire range allotment boundary fence between Unit 6-2M and Unit 6-3M; Care should be taken to ensure machinery does not damage this fence and that slash is not deposited on top of fences in a manner that damages or drops the fence.
