RIO GRANDE NATIONAL FOREST ASBESTOS ABATEMENT
SECTION 028213
ASBESTOS ABATEMENT
PART 1 - GENERAL
1.1 DESCRIPTION
A. The work of this section consists of asbestos abatement tasks.
B. The estimated quantities of the asbestos-containing material (ACM) to be removed are provided in the Summary Tables D.1. below.
C. Take all necessary reasonable measures to control air and water pollution by any material or equipment used during asbestos abatement.
D. Identified and Presumed locations of ACM are summarized in the November 22, 2020 Landmark Environmental Report Asbestos, Lead and Regulated Building Material Inspection Report for Del Norte High School, Del Norte, Colorado. This information is also summarized below:
1. Friable ACM:
a. Composite Drywall System (CDW03): This drywall system is associated with the 1968 portion of the building and is covered by texture (TS02). The joint compound in this drywall system contains chrysotile asbestos. The texture associated with this drywall system (TS02) also contains chrysotile asbestos.
b. Flexible Duct Connector (DT01): Flexible duct connectors throughout the building associated with the HVAC ducting system contain 75% chrysotile asbestos.
c. Off-white smooth textured surfacing (TS02): The texture on the drywall system (CDW03) throughout the 1968 portion of the building contains 3% chrysotile asbestos.
d. Sink Undercoating (UC01): A grey sink undercoating on all three sinks in room A09-55 contains 11-12% chrysotile asbestos.
2. Non-friable ACM
a. Baseboard Adhesive (BB01): Dark brown and tan adhesives associated with dark blue/black colored cove base in the original 1968 portion of the building contains tremolite/actinolite asbestos. The Del Norte High School Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA) information packet listed historical baseboard adhesives containing 5-10% tremolite asbestos. This result is likely due to remnant adhesive from the prior material, listed as removed sometime during the 1990s.
SUPERVISOR’S OFFICE HAZARDOUS MATERIAL REMOVAL 028213-2
b. Remnant Mastics Under Carpet Adhesive (CA01 & CA02): Remnant black mastic that contains chrysotile asbestos was found under carpet in the original 1968 portion of the building.
c. Countertop Material (CB01): Countertops made from asbestos cement material were found in rooms A06-25, A06-26, and A06-27 and contain chrysotile asbestos.
d. Asbestos Cement Panels (CB02): Asbestos cement panels that contain chrysotile asbestos are located under windows in several areas throughout the 1968 portion of the building.
e. Stair Tread Adhesive (MA01): Brown and yellow adhesives associated with the tan stair treads on by the stage in the auditorium (Area 4-2) contain tremolite/actinolite asbestos.
3. Presumed ACM:
a. Ceiling Tile (CT09): Ceiling tiles in the auditorium were too high to sample without the aid of a mechanical lift. These ceiling tiles are presumed to contain asbestos until they are tested at a later date.
b. Chalkboards (CHB01): Chalkboard materials can contain asbestos and are assumed to be under some of the white board materials located throughout the classrooms.
c. Fire Door Insulation (FDM01, FDM02, & FDM03): The interiors of fire doors throughout the building are assumed to be lined with friable ACM insulation until they are tested at a later date.
d. Iron Rests (OT03): Iron rests were reported in the home economics room as detailed in the Del Norte AHERA information packet as containing asbestos.
These iron rests were not observed by the Landmark inspectors over the course of their investigation but were reported to still be present by Del Norte High School staff.
e. Thermal Systems Insulation (TSI): While not observed during the investigation, one historical document from Del Norte High School’s AHERA package makes reference to asbestos pipe fittings in the main building. Pipe fittings were not observed in ceiling plenums or accessible areas, but it is possible that asbestos-containing pipe fittings exist in wall cavities or other inaccessible areas throughout the 1968 portion of the main building.
f. Roofing Materials (RM): Roofing materials were not sampled to protect the integrity of the roof since the building was an active school at the time of inspection. The roofing materials are presumed to contain asbestos until it is tested at a later date.
