About this file
This is an Engineering Specification document for powder coating processes at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), specifically for Advanced Light Source (ALS) Beamline components. The specification documents the standardized procedure for applying Tiger Drylac Series 49 powder coating to fabricated parts and assemblies, replacing previous ALS Blue Paint Specification M767 and ALS Black Paint Specification M863.
The coating process comprises three primary phases: preparation, powder coating application, and finishing. Preparation requires abrasive blasting the entire part to commercial finish per SSPC-SP 6 standards to achieve a 1-2 mil (25-50 micron) blast profile using either garnet sand or glass bead, followed by degreasing with naphtha hydrocarbons free from aromatic compounds, and proper fixturing or racking. The powder coating phase involves heating the fixtured part to 395°F for twenty minutes, applying Tiger Drylac Series 49 powder coating in the specified color, and baking for an additional twenty minutes at 395°F before air cooling. The specification references three standard colors: ALS Blue Gloss (RAL5015/42330), ALS Smooth Black Matte (RAL9005/80350), and ALS Black Gloss (RAL9011/80540), with provisions for additional colors as specified on LBNL prints. Supporting appendices provide Tiger Drylac RAL color charts, cleaning recommendations for coated components, and application guidelines including cure parameters and two-coat process specifications. Tiger Drylac contact information is provided at 1251 E. Belmont Street, Ontario, CA 91761; Phone: 1-800-243-8148; Fax: 909-930-9111.

Title Advanced Light Source - Beamlines General Paint Specification
Summary:
This specification replaces the ALS Blue Paint Specification M767 and ALS Black Paint Specification M863. This specification documents the process for powder coating with Tiger Drylac paint and references the two most commonly used ALS colors, blue and black. Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) fabrication prints will specify the color and finish for painted parts/assemblies.
1. Preparation:
a. Abrasive blast the entire part to a commercial finish in accordance with
SSPC-SP 6, ‘Commercial Blast Cleaning’ to obtain a 1-2 mil (25-50 micron) blast profile. Blasting may be performed using either garnet sand or glass bead. SSPC-SP refers to the Steel Structures Painting Council.
b. Remove any oil or grease from the surfaces to be coated. Direction from Tiger Drylac instructs that degreasing/cleaning should be performed using naphtha hydrocarbons free from aromatic compounds. Solvents containing the following should not be used: ester, ketones, alcohols, aromatic compounds, glycol ether or halogenated hydrocarbons.
c. Appropriately fixture or rack the part to be powder coated.
2. Powder Coating:
a. Place fixtured part in the oven and heat to 395º F for twenty minutes.
b. Remove the part and apply Tiger Drylac Series 49 powder coating, color per drawing notes.
c. Upon completion of applying the powder coat, return the part to the oven and bake for twenty minutes at 395º F.
d. Remove the part from oven and air cool.
3. Colors:
a. ALS Blue Gloss – Series 49, RAL5015/42330
b. ALS Smooth Black Matte – Series 49, RAL9005/80350
c. ALS Black Gloss – Series 49, RAL9011/80540
d. Other colors as specified on LBNL prints.
