About this file
This document is a planting irrigation specification section prepared by the City of St. George, Utah for the Downtown Cemetery Columbarium Plaza construction project located at 100 S and 700 E in St. George. The specification outlines comprehensive irrigation system requirements including trenching, mainline and distribution piping installation, valve placement, sprinkler head installation, drip irrigation components, and electrical controller connections. The work encompasses all labor, materials, equipment, and supplies necessary to complete a fully functional irrigation system capable of watering newly planted materials within 24 hours of installation. The contractor must maintain an experienced full-time supervisor on-site and comply with City of St. George Standard Specifications and Landscape Standards Ordinance requirements. The irrigation system must achieve 100 percent coverage with a minimum 70 percent distribution uniformity for single stream rotors and 60 percent for fixed spray heads, verified through a third-party water audit by an Irrigation Association-certified auditor.
Material and product specifications are detailed throughout the document, including required suppliers such as Rainbird Corporation for controllers and sprinklers, Wilkins for backflow preventers, and various approved equal alternatives for piping components ranging from PVC Schedule 40 and 80 to polyethylene options. Installation requirements mandate minimum depths of 24 inches for mainline piping and 18 inches for lateral piping, with all sleeves under pavements having a minimum 4-inch diameter. The contractor bears responsibility for plant replacement at no cost if irrigation system malfunction results in plant loss. Hydrostatic pressure testing is required at 150 psi for mainlines and 100 psi for lateral lines, with all work subject to City inspection and approval prior to proceeding to subsequent tasks. A one-year warranty from the date of final acceptance is required, and the contractor must provide operation and maintenance manuals, controller charts, keys, warranties, and as-built record drawings upon project close-out.

2. Protect sub-grades from softening, undermining, washout, and damage by rain or water accumulation.
a. Reroute surface water runoff away from excavated areas. Do not allow water to accumulate in excavations. Do not use excavated trenches as temporary drainage ditches.
G. EXCAVATION FOR TRENCHES
1. Excavate trenches to indicated gradients, lines, depths, and elevations.
2. Beyond building perimeter, excavate trenches to allow installation of top of pipe below frost line.
3. Excavate trenches to uniform widths to provide the following clearance on each side of pipe or conduit. Excavate trench walls vertically from trench bottom to provide minimum cover over top of underground piping according to the following:
a. Irrigation Main Piping: Minimum depth of 24” inches below finished grade.
b. Lateral Piping: 18 inches.
