About this file

This document is a Statement of Work (SOW) for groundwater sampling and geochemical testing services at the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS) for the Defense Nuclear Nonproliferation Program's Rock Valley Direct Comparison (RV/DC) project. The subcontractor will collect groundwater samples from a core boring drilled to approximately 7,000 feet below ground surface, specifically at a depth of 6,398 +/- 164 feet. Required geochemical testing includes pH, salinity, total dissolved solids, and cation/anion analysis for sulfate and hydrogen sulfide.

Key technical requirements mandate that sampling equipment must operate at temperatures up to 185°F, pressures up to 2,600 psi, and collect samples in a 3.77-inch diameter borehole. The work will be performed in Area 27 of the NNSS, approximately 14 miles northwest of Mercury, Nevada. The subcontractor must provide all necessary equipment, submit a detailed sampling plan, provide field logs within 24 hours of collection, and be able to mobilize within 730 days' notice, with field operations to be completed between 30-45 days from notice. On-site personnel cannot be foreign nationals, and all sampling and testing must be coordinated with the Subcontract Technical Representative.

B-1 Scope/Background

1. Scope: This Statement of Work (SOW) defines the requirements to conduct groundwater sampling services and geochemical testing for the core boring to be drilled at the Rock Valley Direct Comparison (RV/DC) Testbed site. The core boring will be drilled by others under a separate subcontract. The core boring is hereinafter referred to as the Corehole (CH) in this document.

2. Project Background: The work consists of collecting groundwater samples and performing geochemical analysis to support the Defense Nuclear Nonproliferation Program’s RV/DC project at the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS). A small diameter CH will be drilled to a total depth (TD) of approximately 7,000 ft (2,134 m) below ground surface (bgs). The CH will be cased from the surface to 4,000 ft (1,219 m) bgs with an inner diameter (ID) no smaller than 3.9 inch (99 mm). The CH will be open hole, with a diameter greater than or equal to 3.7 in (93.98 mm), between 4,000 ft (1,219 m) bgs and TD. Groundwater samples will be collected at a depth of 6,398 +164 ft/-656.2 ft (1,950 +50 m/-200 m) bgs. Chemical analysis will be performed on the collected groundwater samples. Groundwater sampling will occur at the end of CH drilling, and the drilling subcontractor will pump at least three well volumes of water to purge drilling fluids. The well will sit for a short period prior to groundwater sample collection. The drillers will be on site during sample collection.

3. General Site Information:

3.1. The Nevada National Security Site (NNSS) is a U.S. Department of Energy, National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) installation, operated by Mission Support and Test Services, LLC (CONTRACTOR), comprising approximately 3,561 square kilometers (1,375 square miles) of federally owned land located in southeastern Nye County, Nevada. Located approximately 105 kilometers (65 miles) northwest of Las Vegas, Nevada, the NNSS is accessed from U.S. Highway 95 toward Mercury (see Figure 1) The RV/DC project site is located in Area 27, approximately 14 miles northwest of Mercury (see Figure 2). The CH will be installed on the center of 3 drill pads that will be constructed on site (see Figure 3).

3.2. The CONTRACTOR also operates the North Las Vegas Facility (NLV); the Remote Sensing Lab at Nellis AFB, North Las Vegas, NV (RSLN); the Remote Sensing Lab at Andrews AFB, Maryland (RSLA); Special Technologies Lab at Santa Barbara, CA (STL); Livermore Operations at Livermore, CA (LO); and Los Alamos Operations at Los Alamos, NM (LAO).
