BACKGROUND - TA-21 and 21-257

TA-21 is located on DP Mesa on the northern boundary of the Los Alamos National Laboratory and is immediately east-southeast of the Los Alamos town site. DP West operations began in September of 1945, primarily to produce metal and alloys of plutonium from the nitrate solution feedstock provided by other production facilities, as well as nuclear fuel reprocessing. This procedure involved several acid dissolution and chemical precipitation steps to separate the plutonium and other valuable actinides from the feedstock.

Building TA-21-257 constructed in 1966, was the TA-21 radiological liquid waste treatment facility designed to treat liquid waste from DP Site operations (DP West and DP East buildings) and prepare the waste for disposal. Building 21-257 is approximately 4,000 ft² with a rectangular foundation footprint consisting of reinforced concrete slab, stem walls and footings. General construction is reinforced concrete and CMU walls with a built-up roof containing bituminous roofing materials, tar and gravel. A membrane was used as a roof patch in 2014. Building 21-257 includes thirteen numbered rooms and a raw waste storage area north of Room 105. A complete description of each room and its function is included in DP Site Aggregate Area Building 21-0257 Footprint Letter Work Plan. Some areas of particular interest include rooms 104, 105, 106, and 108. Area/room 104 was the batch waste process area where two of the influent batch waste storage tanks and chemical feeders to the batch waste treatment area (Area 106) were located. Area/room 105 was the process area containing the flash mixer, flocculator, sludge collector, settling tank, filter sump pressure filter, sludge storage and an influent batch waste storage tank. This area is located below floor grade.

The sump floor varies between 10 ft. and 19 ft. below the first floor. North of Area/room 105 was the raw waste storage area and consists of two side-by-side 29,000-gallon concrete raw influent storage tanks.

The tanks are 17 ft. deep along the inner walls and 19ft from the top to bottom of the walls along the exterior and each is approximately 14 ft. below grade surface. Area/room 106 was the batch waste treatment area and room 108 was used as an analytical laboratory for the treated effluent waste. Building 21-257 was still active and maintained operation until 2006 when it was placed in inactive standby status. Currently the building is “cold and dark”. The following is a list of key structures associated with Building 21-257:
