About this program
The Corporation for National and Community Service administers AmeriCorps State and National (94.006), which funds eligible organizations that recruit, train, and manage AmeriCorps members to address unmet community needs through evidence-based or evidence-informed service interventions; the most recent grant award was obligated on January 1, 2027.
The program has disbursed 2,915 awards totaling $8.86 billion in federal dollars since 1994, with combined federal and non-federal obligations reaching $15.45 billion. Award volume has declined sharply in recent years—from 122 awards in 2023 to 34 in 2026 and only 2 in early 2027—signaling a shift in program cadence or capacity. Grant awards are predominantly Project Grants (83 percent, 2,415 awards), with smaller shares of Cooperative Agreements (13 percent, 383 awards) and Formula Grants (4 percent, 117 awards). The Corporation for National and Community Service Office of Grants Management has obligated $5.18 billion across 1,148 awards, while the parent Corporation entity obligated $3.68 billion across 1,767 awards; these two funders account for the entire portfolio.
AmeriCorps members serve full-time in positions addressing community challenges across education, health, housing, employment, environment, food and nutrition, disaster relief, and community development. Members receive living allowances and benefits, including a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award upon completion of service that can be applied to higher education or student loan repayment. Recipients must maintain records for three years post-award and comply with criminal history screening requirements for all service personnel.
Recent awards reflect the program's structure: Vermont Housing and Conservation Board received $734,172 for 30 member service years (MSYs) at $24,423.55 per MSY (January 2027); Texas received a National Direct fixed-amount award of $3.478 million at $25,000 per MSY (January 2027); and New York received a State Competitive fixed-amount award of $10.26 million serving City Year, The Research Foundation for SUNY, and Student Conservation Association across multiple MSYs (July 2026). Most grants carry mandatory match requirements ranging from 0 percent to 40 percent, with some grants including match replacement funds.
The FY 2027 AmeriCorps State and National Competitive Grants (Solicitation AC-08-28-26) is currently open, with applications due January 13, 2027. This opportunity is available to state governments, tribal governments and organizations, 501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3) nonprofits, counties, cities, higher education institutions, and special district governments. Standard three-year project periods are typical; assistance must be consistent with approved grant applications and 2 CFR 200 cost principles apply.
