About this opportunity

The National Institutes of Health Clinical Center, a civilian agency under the Department of Health and Human Services, published a Notice of Intent to Sole Source on April 3, 2026, regarding maintenance services for specialized medical equipment. This special notice announces the NIH's intention to award a fixed-price purchase order to United Imaging Healthcare for hardware and software maintenance of the United Imaging uNeuroExplorer, a human brain PET/CT scanner located at the NIH Clinical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. The acquisition is categorized under Product Service Code 6515 (Medical Instruments, Equipment, and Supplies) and NAICS Code 339112 (Surgical and Medical Instrument Manufacturing). This notice is not a formal request for quotation, and no solicitation document will be issued to the general public.

The primary objective of this sole-source acquisition is to ensure the proper and safe operation and continued availability of the uNeuroExplorer scanner for Clinical Center patient imaging services. The acquisition will proceed under FAR Part 13 Simplified Acquisition Procedures, which exempts the procurement from standard competition requirements, as the contracting officer has determined that only one source is reasonably available. United Imaging is the sole provider capable of delivering unfettered maintenance services because the scanner incorporates proprietary technologies and design features protected as United Imaging intellectual property, requiring access to confidential information exclusively held by the manufacturer. The notice was posted on April 3, 2026, with an April 10, 2026 deadline for interested parties to identify their capabilities and interest. Interested contractors may submit responses indicating their qualifications, though only United Imaging is anticipated to meet the technical and proprietary access requirements necessary for this maintenance contract.
