Statement of Work for the HSR 49.2 MHz RF System Power Amplifiers
1 SCOPE
This Statement of Work (SOW) will be the basis for the procurement of the HSR 49.2 MHz
Radiofrequency (RF) System Power Amplifiers to be used at the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) at
Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) managed by Brookhaven Science Associates (BSA). This document outlines the Contractor’s responsibilities and obligations necessary for completing the requirements as set forth herein.
1.1 Background
The EIC Project will design, build, and install the accelerator hardware for a new electron storage ring, an electron injector, and modifications to the hadron ring required to produce an electron-ion collider and infrastructure. It will include one interaction region, with an allowance for a second, and one detector. The facility is designed to meet requirements to ensure high reliability and availability for the user program.
The High-Power RF (HPRF) System for the HSR 49.2 MHz RF will be used to provide power to the 49.2 MHz Normal Conducting RF (NCRF) Cavities. These cavities will be used for the bunch splitting of hadron beams in the HSR of the EIC. Amplifiers that can reliably deliver up to 120 kW of RF power are needed to achieve the necessary bunch splitting pattern in the HSR 49.2 MHz
Normal Conducting RF Cavities.
1.2 Definitions
The following paragraphs outline keywords used to describe certain aspects of the 49.2 MHz RF
System Power Amplifiers.
Amplifying Stage – An Amplifying Stage is defined as the group of identical RF amplifiers that are operated in parallel to provide signal amplification within the SSPA. A SSPA usually has at least a couple of amplifying stages.
Demonstrator – The demonstrator should be the largest granularity amplifier sub chassis that when combined with like kind hardware at the system level will provide the full output power. It is considered the fundamental building block of any salable RF amplifier architecture. The demonstrator will be used as proof of concept to qualify that the design typology and critical component margins implemented by the Contractor comply with the technical specification. The demonstrator is defined as an amplifier, the incorporated interlock and monitoring devices, and local control and monitoring interfaces.
Doc No. EIC-RFS-SOW-011 Author: Mark Hoffmann Wallner Effective Date: October 29, 2026 Review Frequency: N/A
This document contains BNL procurement requirements and specifications for solicitation and technical evaluation. The information is high-level and does not include the detail necessary for 'development' or 'production' as defined under 15 CFR §772.1, 22 CFR §120.33, or 10 CFR Part
810; therefore, it does not constitute export-controlled technology or technical data.
Hard Limit – A limit to a fault or warning condition that is locked behind contractor-protected password, meant for critical SSPA protection.
Local Protection – Protection designed to be applied at the Solid-State Power Amplifier level.
RF Device – An RF Device is an RF power field-effect transistor (FET). It usually has one or two sets of gate and drain terminals, a metallic flange that is also its source terminal, and either a plastic or ceramic package covering its semiconductor elements.
RF Unit – An RF Unit an RF network that contains: (a) an RF Device, (b) RF matching networks, and (c) bias networks for the RF Device gate and drain terminals. It may contain more elements, including but not limited to circulators, dummy loads, circuitry for signal monitoring, impedance transformers, and RF and power connectors.
Radiofrequency Power Amplifier (RF-PA) – A Radiofrequency Power Amplifier (RF-PA) is defined as the modular unit of the last Amplifying Stage within the SSPA. It may have one to several identical RF Units operating in parallel with embedded RF splitting and combining structures. A SSPA may have up to several hundred RF-PAs.
Remote Control – The Remote Control system is BSA’s control system to handle communication between different equipment. It will be implemented via Experimental Physics and Industrial
Control System (EPICS).
Soft Limit – An adjustable limit to a fault or warning condition which may be further sensitized by the end user.
Solid-Sate Power Amplifier (SSPA) – The Solid-State Power Amplifier (SSPA) comprises all subsystems – alternating current (AC) distribution, direct current (DC) power supplies, RF, cooling, controls – assembled in a functional device that provides RF power amplification. This term is mutually exchangeable with HSR 49.2 MHz RF System Power Amplifier in this document.
Figure 1 provides a generic architecture of an RF subsystem of a Solid-State Power Amplifier. It serves merely as an illustration of certain elements defined in this Subsection, and it is by no means a comprehensive diagram of the whole system nor a suggestion of how the SSPA should be designed or manufactured by the Contractor.
