About this opportunity
The Department of Agriculture Forest Service seeks a firm fixed-price stewardship contract to perform timber thinning, fuels reduction, and forest health restoration on approximately 182 acres of the Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre, and Gunnison National Forest near Montrose, Colorado, with proposals due June 12, 2026, at 1:00 PM Mountain Time. The procurement is a total small business set-aside (100% unrestricted) issued as a call order against the Rocky Mountain Restoration Project (RMRP) Stewardship BPA; only companies approved as call-order-eligible under that BPA may compete.
Place of performance is the Ouray Ranger District in Montrose County, Colorado. The contract encompasses mandatory work on 135 acres—cutting, skidding, and decking designated timber; slash treatment via mastication or chipping; and road maintenance on 6.1 miles—plus optional work on an additional 47 acres and removal of timber subject to agreement (estimated 64 CCF of sawtimber and 63 CCF of non-sawtimber) with minimum acceptable offers of $1.00 per CCF for sawtimber and $0.25 per CCF for non-sawtimber. The contract runs from award through June 16, 2027. Thinning must achieve 16x16-foot average spacing in ponderosa pine plantations with 70-90 square feet per acre basal area retention; no trees greater than 12 inches DBH shall be cut unless evidence of beetles or mistletoe is present. A mandatory pre-proposal site visit and conference occurred May 27, 2026. Amendment 001, effective May 28, 2026, added site visit notes and clarified that landings are not predesignated, award will be based on best overall value under FAR 52.212-2 rather than lowest price, and skid trail spacing shall be agreed upon prior to construction. Evaluation weighs technical approach (significantly more important), past performance, and local community benefit approximately equally against cost. Questions were due May 15, 2026.
