About this opportunity
Brookhaven Science Associates, LLC (BSA), operating Brookhaven National Laboratory under contract with the Department of Energy Office of Science, is soliciting information regarding a magnetron sputter deposition system designed for quantum device fabrication through the Co-design Center for Quantum Advantage (C2QA). The RFI seeks vendor capabilities and technical specifications for an ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) system with highly specialized components including a stainless-steel sputtering chamber, vacuum pumping infrastructure, multi-gas handling systems, magnetron sputtering sources capable of supporting up to seven 2-inch confocal magnetron sources, substrate heating to 1000°C, and integrated computer control systems. Key technical requirements specify a base vacuum of 2×10⁻⁹ Torr, precision process monitoring, RF/DC power supplies, and advanced control interfaces for high-quality thin film synthesis of superconducting materials. The evaluation will assess vendor responses to nine specific questions addressing specification compliance, facility requirements, site preparation, equipment footprints, electrical safety certification, manufacturing origin, warranty options, and references from similar installations in research institutions. Responses must be submitted electronically to ahagler@bnl.gov with "BSA RFI-471842" in the subject line by December 24, 2025 at 5:00 PM Eastern Time.
This is a Request for Information notice only, not a formal solicitation or request for proposal, and no commitment or payment for information will be made by the U.S. Government. No set-aside designations apply to this procurement opportunity. The RFI is categorized under Analytical Laboratory Instrument Manufacturing (NAICS 334516) and Operation of Government-Owned Contractor-Operated R&D Facilities (PSC M1HA), indicating the specialized nature of the equipment and research environment. No specific contract award value or budget range is disclosed in this pre-solicitation notice, as the RFI is intended solely for market research and capability assessment to inform future procurement decisions. The information gathered will help DOE and BSA survey available vendor resources and determine the feasibility and approach for acquiring this advanced quantum fabrication equipment for research purposes.
