Maintenance Action Codes

CODE
DESCRIPTION
A
Replaced. This code is used when an item (repair parts, components, and so on) is removed and replaced concurrently (or at a later time) by a like or an equivalent item (except for gun/howitzer tubes and hourmeters/odometers, see codes W and X). For the purpose of avionics, when the equivalent item changes the avionic system designation, use action codes "R" and "S" in lieu of action code "A."
B
Adjusted. This code is used when tightening, adjusting, bleeding, rigging or activating reset buttons or switches, regulating, and so on.
C
Repaired. This code is used when a reparable item is repaired. This includes, but is not limited to, disassembly, cleaning incidental to repair action, inspection, adjustment, internal lubrication, replacement of integral parts, assemblies and sub-assemblies, and welding.
D
Manufacture/Fabrication Of Repair Parts. This code is used when repair parts are manufactured or fabricated from stock. This includes but is not limited to such items as hydraulic tubes, lines and hoses, and noncritical airframe members and brackets.
E

F
Initial Inspection. This code is used when inspecting items to establish maintenance action(s) required to return item to serviceable status.
G
Final Inspection. This code is used when inspecting items to determine acceptability of maintenance accomplished.
H
Modification Work Order (MWO). This code is used to identify the application of Modification Work Orders.
J
Tested. This code is used when performing diagnostic or mechanical tests which are used to measure the performance of an item against established serviceability/technical standards.
L
Removed and Installed. This code is used when an item is removed for any reason and the same item is reinstalled.
M
Checked, NRTS. This code is used when an item is checked or tested and it is determined to be "Not Reparable at This Station or site." Note: Local policy may prescribe use of NRTS codes in table B–10 of DA Pam 750-8.
N
Checked. Not Reparable. This code is used when an item is checked or tested and it is determined to be nonreparable (condemned). This code applies also for items beyond economic repair limitations.
P
Checked, Serviceable. This code is used for items checked or tested and no repair is required. This code is applicable only if it is determined that a reported fault does not exist or cannot be duplicated.
R
Removed. This code is used when an item is removed, and only the removal time is to be accounted for.
S
Installed. This code is used when an item is installed, and only the installation time is to be accounted for.
T
TB compliance. This code is used to identify the compliance with the instructions of a specifically cited technical bulletin.
U
Decontamination of equipment.
W
Hourmeter/Odometer Change. This code is used to indicate the replacement of an hour meter and/or odometer.
X

FUNCTIONAL GROUPING CODES

Functional Grouping Codes (FGC) are established to identify major components and subcomponents of materiel on which inspection, maintenance and/or service is required.

Component: A group of physically connected assemblies and/or parts which are capable of independent operation or may be externally controlled and may derive their power from another source. When combined with other components, assemblies, and/or parts, they form a subsystem or end item.

Functional Group Code. A standardized system to index materiel for ready identification. The basic or two-digit code identifies the major assembly, and the next two digits identify the subassembly and/or part within the major assembly.

Example: Code 01 identifies an engine assembly and Code 0102 identifies the crankshaft and related parts within the engine assembly.

SOURCE MAINTENANCE AND RECOVERABILITY CODE (SMR)

Source Maintenance and Recoverability Code is a five position code containing Supply/requisitioning information, Maintenance level authorization criteria, and Disposition instructions. The Sample Data Collection and Analysis Program requires the SMR Code to be entered into all Parts. SMR Codes must be a valid SMR Code that can be requested from supply.

SOURCE CODE EXPLANATION (Positions 1 and 2): Source codes are assigned to support items to indicate the manner of acquiring support items for maintenance, repair, rework, or overhaul of end items and to identify items requiring special handling (for example, hazardous and precious materials).

P Series Source Coded Items: Items which are centrally procured.

PA – Item procured and stocked for anticipated or known usage. Items are normally considered for replenishment.

PB – Item procured and stocked for insurance purposes because essentiality dictates that a quantity be available in the supply systems.

PC – Item procured and stocked, but is deteriorative in nature.

PD – Support item excluding support equipment, procured for initial issue or outfitting and stocked only for subsequent or additional initial issues or out-fittings. Not subject to automatic replenishment.

PE – End item or support equipment procured and stocked for initial issue or outfitting for specific maintenance repair activities.

PF – Support equipment which will not be stocked, but which will be centrally procured on demand.

PG – Item procured and stocked to provide for sustained support for the life of the equipment. It is applied to an item, which because of probable discontinuance or shutdown of production facilities, would prove uneconomical to reproduce at a later time.

PH – Item procured and stocked and has been identified to contain hazardous material that requires special handling during normal use. Item requires recordation in the Hazardous Material Information Resource System and a Safety Data Sheet.

PR – End item and support item, terminal or obsolete and replaced. No longer authorized for procurement. On hand assets may be issued until exhausted. Then use replacement item.

PZ – Item terminal or obsolete with no replacement; discontinue use (Army only). This code will not affect other Services if they are recorded as a user at the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) Logistics Information Service.

K Series Source Coded Items: Contained in kits and do not/will not have an NSN assigned.

KD – An item contained in a depot overhaul or repair kit and not purchased separately. Depot kit defined as a kit that provides items required at the time of depot overhaul or repair.

KF – An item contained in a maintenance kit and not purchased separately. Maintenance kit defined as a kit that provides an item that can be replaced at organizational or intermediate LOMs.

KB – Item included in both a depot overhaul or repair kit and a maintenance kit.

M Series Source Coded Items: Are to be manufactured or fabricated at some level of maintenance.

MO – Item to be manufactured or fabricated at organizational activity.

MF – Item to be manufactured or fabricated at intermediate maintenance activity. U.S. Marine Corps (USMC)-Field, Army-Field, and U.S. Navy (USN)-afloat.

MH – Item to be manufactured or fabricated at intermediate maintenance activity. USMC-Field component repair activity, Army-Sustainment, and USN-ashore.

ML – Item is to be manufactured at a specialized repair facility (for example, environmental considerations).

MG – Item to be manufactured or fabricated at both afloat and ashore intermediate maintenance activities (USN use only).

MD - Item to be manufactured or fabricated at depot maintenance activity.

A Series Source Coded Items: Are authorized for assembly at some level of maintenance.

AO – Item to be assembled at organizational activity.

AL – Item is to be assembled at a specialized repair activity (for example, item requires specialized tests and fixtures to insure proper assembly).

AF – Item to be assembled at intermediate maintenance activity. USMC-Field, Army-Field, and USN-afloat.

AH – Item to be assembled at intermediate maintenance activity. USMC-Field component repair activity, Army-Sustainment, and USN-ashore.

AG – Item to be assembled at both afloat and ashore intermediate maintenance activities. (USN use only).

AD – Item to be assembled at depot maintenance activity.

X Series Source Coded Items: Are items for which no demand is anticipated.

XA – Item is not procured or stocked because the requirements for the item will result in the replacement of the next higher assembly.

XB – Support item with low mortality rate, not procured or stocked. Item may or may not be available through salvage. Salvage should be considered, unless use of salvage item is prohibited by instructions in equipment publications. If prohibited, requisition through normal supply channels using commercial and government entity code and reference number.

XC – Installation drawing, diagram, instruction sheet, or field Service drawing, that is identified by the manufacturers' part number.

XD – Support item with low mortality rate, not stocked. Local purchase or requisition through normal channels using contractor and commercial and government entity and reference number. Not obtainable from salvage or cannibalization.

MAINTENANCE CODE EXPLANATION (Position 3 – Use Code): Indicates the LOM and/or maintenance activity authorized to use, remove, and replace the item.

C – Support item is removed, replaced, used by the operator/crew.

O – Support item is removed, replaced, or used at the organizational activity (Field Level).

F – Support item is removed, replaced, or used at Field Level Maintenance.

H - Support item is removed, replaced, used at below depot sustainment.

K – Repairable item. Item is removed, replaced, or used at contractor facility.

L – Item is removed, replaced, or used at designated specialized repair activity.

D – Support items that are removed, replaced, or used at depot only.

MAINTENANCE CODE EXPLANATION (Position 4 – Repair Code): Indicates whether the item is to be repaired and identifies the LOM and/or maintenance activity with the capability to perform a complete repair action.

C – The lowest maintenance activity capable of complete repair of the support item is the operator/crew.

O – The lowest maintenance activity capable of complete repair of the support item is the organizational activity (Field Level).

F – The lowest maintenance activity capable of complete repair of the support item is Field maintenance or ASB.

H – The maintenance activity capable of complete repair of the support item is Below depot sustainment.

K – Repairable support item. Complete repair capability exists at a designated contractor facility.

D – The lowest maintenance level capable of complete repair of the support item is the depot activity.

L – Repair should be performed at the designated specialized repair activity.

Z – Non-repairable. No repair is authorized.

B – No repair is authorized. The item may be reconditioned (for example, by adjusting and lubricating) by the user.

RECOVERABILITY CODE EXPLANATION (Position 5): Indicates the LOM and/or maintenance activity authorized to dispose of the item. If the item is reparable, it also indicates repair as applicable under the progressive maintenance concept.

C – Repairable item. When uneconomically repairable, condemn and disposed by the operator/crew.

Z – Non-repairable item. When item becomes unserviceable, condemn and disposed of by authorized activity.

O – Repairable item. When uneconomically repairable, condemn and dispose at organizational activity (Field Level).

F – Repairable item. When uneconomically repairable, condemn and dispose at Field maintenance or ASB.

G – Field level repairable item. When uneconomically repairable, condemn and dispose at either afloat or ashore intermediate levels (USN use only).
