Columbia VA ICU 4 East Relocation
MECHANICAL RFI’s
RFI 001 – Please provide information in regards to the FCU’s on the 4th floor that have to be demo. Is there a shut off valve in the third floor ceiling? What services feed these units i.e. CHW/HW 4 pipe or 2 pipe system?
According to the as-built drawings provided by the VA, the FCUs are 4-pipe units. There are isolation valves at various points in the CHW & HW risers, but none that isolate the 4th floor alone.
RFI 002 – Can you provide the supply and return CFM’s along with the electrical voltage and weights for the temporary AHU’s that the VA is allowing the Mechanical Contractor to use during construction? Do these units have CHW/HW/Cond./Steam connections? Will these units be available throughout the whole duration of the project?
VA owned Air Handling Unit info:
Trane 50 ton unit: self contained package type outdoor Air Handling Unit, 50 tons total cooling capacity, 20000 CFM, 8000 pounds. This unit is rated at 460 V, 3 phase and is equipped with integral electric heating coil rated at 108 KW input.
Trane 25 ton unit: self contained package type outdoor Air Handling Unit, 25 tons total cooling capacity, 10000 CFM, 6000 pounds. This unit is rated at 460 V, 3 phase.
These units do not have Chilled water/steam connection.
RFI 003 – Will a crane be allowed to set up in the Emergency drive area for a installation of the new AHUs on the 4th and 5th floor mechanical rooms?
Upon approval by the COTR and emergency room staff a crane will be allowed in the Emergency Driveway for a short period of time and as long as only one lane is closed. The shall be flag men present on both sides of the crane at all time.
RFI 004 – Will temporary air need to be provided for both AC-6 and AC-7? Does AC-6 only serve the fourth floor is so does this space need to be conditioned?
Yes temporary air is needed for both AHU’s. The AHU on the fifth floor provides air to the fourth floor and to a portion of the corridor on the fourth floor.
RFI 005 - Drawing M101 – none of the low pressure supply duct is sized it is understood that the single diffuser VAV boxes are the same as the diffuser but what are the sizes when multiple diffusers are attached? Are these run-outs rectangular or can they be round? If so can the round duct be priced as snaplock or does it have to be manufactured Spiral?
Secondary ducts may be round but shall be manufactured spiral type. Size ductwork to maintain a pressure loss rate of not more than 0.08" w.g. per 100'.
RFI 006 - Spec section 23 31 00 2.2 B calls for the duct pressure class to be 4” W.G. Is this for all Supply/Return/Fresh Air? Can the Return and Downstream of the VAV Boxes be 2” Low pressure?
All ductwork shall be 4" w.g. pressure class.
RFI 007 – Drawing M301 & M302 show OA intake louvers that are in place now coming off of AC-6 & AC-
7. Are these louvers to be replaced by new OA Louvers or are the existing ones to be reinstalled to match existing?
The existing louvers may be reinstalled to match other existing hardware after they have been cleaned of all built-up dirt & debris and any damage from use or removal has been repaired.
RFI 008 - While reviewing the specifications I found the following. We specified the ICU doors as sole source as defined in spec. section 08 42 43 part 2.
Specification 08 42 43 part 2 2.01 B states “Substitutions”.
Spec 08 2 43 part 2 2.01 B should state “Brand Name or Equal”.
RFI 009 - Question: Could you explain the riser configuration for the two AHU’s that are going to be replaced.
See the attached riser diagram showing the before and after configuration of the risers for the AHU on the Fourth Floor East Wing and the Fifth Floor East Wing? The before configuration is taken from available as-built drawings and not guaranteed. The air quantities must be measured by the general contractor for each riser before any demolition begins.
RFI 010 Who is the manufacture of the existing CCTV cameras on site?
Answer: Telco
RFI 011: Is the CCTV system analog or IP?
Answer: The system is analog.
RFI 012: Are you running any Video Management software at this time.
Answer: Not to my knowledge.
RFI 013: Access control – who is the manufacture of the system you are currently utilizing now?
Answer: WanderGuard
RFI 014: Sheet S1 detail 9 and 10 show typical framing layout for ceilings of 22 rooms. The reflected ceiling plan AS103 shows acoustical ceilings in many of these rooms. Are S1/9 and S1/10 framing details required in rooms with acoustical ceilings. Please clarify which rooms require framing indicated on detail 9 and 10 sheet S1.
Answer: The framing details on sheet S1 pertain are intended to pertain only to those rooms indicated on the ceiling plans as having a hard gypsum board ceiling. Detail 9/S1 relates to rooms 4C104A, 4C107A, 4C108A, & 4C117A. Detail 10/S1 relates to rooms 4C100A & 4C122A. Framing plans should be referenced based on ceiling configurations indicated for these particular spaces on the ceiling plans.
Metal stud ceiling framing is not required in those spaces indicated on the ceiling plans as having lay-in acoustical ceilings.
RFI 015: Details 9/S-1 and 10/S-1 show 8" Light-gauge metal joist framing over all patient rooms in very detailed fashion. This conflicts directly with RCP AS- 103 that shows drywall ceilings on the joist framing at six patient rooms only (Key note 4). The balance of the patient rooms are shown as ACT (Key note 3).
Can you please clarify?

RFI 016: Our subcontractor has stated that the wallcovering listed (Eykon 2VPN-01) is not a correct pattern number according to Eykon, could you please verify?
Answer: See attached PDF document titled “Wallcovering”
RFI 017: This RFI is submitted to formally clarify the architecture of the existing, campus-wide BAS system in use at the Columbia VA Hospital, and to request a deviation from the specifications in order to use similar, compatible controllers on the Relocate ICU project.
Answer: The Mechanical Engineer currently has this project specified to tie into the existing HONEYWELL system on page 230923-1 Paragraph D.
Specification 23-09-23.1.1.H requires that the Top End communicate via BACnet and the Bottom End via LonTalk. Provide an open system architecture as required by the contract documents.
The existing specification 23 09 23-1 paragraph D specifies Honeywell. That designation by the A/E is incorrect. We have switched to a Siemens system. See below which clarifies the matter.
This specification does not reflect the current BAS system in use on the Columbia campus is Siemens Apogee which this project is an extension of. The existing BAS uses Siemens protocol controllers on a wired, RS-485, LAN. While the Siemens host PC (the ECC) does support an open system architecture such as BACnet, the Columbia VA IT department will not allow the BAS to reside on their Ethernet LAN, which means a top level BACnet/IP network cannot be used. All of the existing “bottom end” or application-specific controllers, including those in the ICU Relocation Project are Siemens P1 protocol controllers wired to building-wide RS- 485 LANs. We therefore request that we be able to use these controllers, and wire them into the existing VA Hospital LAN. The existing Insight Host PC and software will be updated to the latest revisions of software.
