BIDDER’S QUESTIONS AND GOVERNMENT REPLY

1. Please provide clarification on the #5 Dowels drilled into Rock Face and Adhered with cement grout as detailed on drawing sheet S-003.

a. What diameter holes need to be drilled into the rock face?

Response: The holes shall be between 1 ¼” to 1 ½” in diameter for the 5/8” dowels

b. Please provide specifications for the Cement Grout.

Response: Grout for grouting anchors / dowels shall consist of a homogenous, pumpable, stable mixture of portland cement and water. Submit the proposed mix design to the Contracting Officer's Representative for approval. The water content shall be the minimum necessary for proper placement but the water-cement ratio shall be between 0.40 and 0.45 by weight. Final proportions of materials shall be based on results of tests made on sample mixtures of grout. The minimum compressive strength of two-inch cubes, molded, cured, and tested in accordance with ASTM C109/C109M, shall be 3,500 psi at the time of stressing. The Contractor is responsible for taking, curing, and breaking of grout test cubes for determining mix design, and all testing shall be done by an independent laboratory approved by the Contracting Officer. Rock conditions and temperatures shall be replicated in the curing process.

2. Please provide more information on the Formwork for installation of Shotcrete against the Existing Timber and Lagging as detailed on drawing sheet 4/S-003.

a. Can shotcrete be applied directly to the Existing Timber lagging?

Response: There are large voids in the timber lagging and the proposed form is intended to block those voids. If Contractor does not care to block the voids or has alternate methods, the form can be eliminated.

b. What methods can be utilized to secure the rebar cage to the Formwork or Existing Timber lagging prior to shotcrete application?

Response: This is actually a “means & methods” issue. We would suggest that j-hooks be attached (screwed) to the proposed wood form (or to the existing lagging), and used to secure the rebar cage in place.

Note that, in lieu of a bonding agent, some mini-dowels or pins should be installed on the backing substrate to adhere the shotcrete. Any hooks that are used to secure the rebar cage could be incorporated into that pattern.
