About this file

This document includes a field service report and details of a related federal contract opportunity. The field service report documents an inspection of a generator on the US McFarland Dredge conducted by TECO-Westinghouse Motor Company under a contracted scope of work. Testing identified a shorted pole causing vibration issues. The federal contract opportunity is an invitation for bid from the US Army Corps of Engineers Philadelphia District for drydocking and repairs to the Dredge McFarland. Work includes drydocking, hull painting, propulsion repairs, steel replacement and other maintenance. The dredge specifications and vessel information are provided. The performance period is 120 calendar days and the opportunity is a 100% small business set-aside for NAICS code 336611. Liquidated damages and bonding are required.

Subject: Centerline Auxiliary Generator Site Location: Fort Mifflin Dock

Purchase Order Number: W25PHS10771734 TWMC Job Number: 30-002/ 520000000 Motor Serial Number: 2S-71P882

TECO-Westinghouse Motor Company was contracted to inspect and investigate the root cause of the high vibrations of the auxiliary generator on the US McFarland Dredge. Teco- Westinghouse suggested that a drop test across the synchronous generator poles be conducted as well as perform a RDI motion amplification & analysis be conducted to determine the cause of the vibration.

Agreed Scope of Work:

Voltage Drop test across the rotor poles

RDI motion amplification recording

Daily Trip Log:

Tuesday, July 6th – Traveled from Houston, TX to Washington, D.C.

Wednesday, July 7st – Onsite o Met with Austin Gerrard to discuss work scope.

o LOTO performed and JSHA performed.

o Covers removed to expose motor poles to perform drop test.

o Drop test performed and verified by crew at site (please see chart below).

o Value taken from pole 4 to 5 showed pole was shorted, the Pole was retested multiple times to verify reading was correct.

o All other poles tested satisfactory.

o During visual inspection pole 1 through 3 looked to have lamentation damage on

O.D. of the pole.

o There was an abnormal bend between poles 9 and 1 copper connecting bar.

o After drop test was completed, covers were reinstalled.

o RDI camera was utilized to record generator runs.

The generator was started four (4) times and recorded without excitation provided to the generator.

The generator was then started four (4) additional times and recorded with excitation provided to the generator.

Data was collected and stored.

o Customer did request full inspection recommendations for generator.

Thursday, July 2nd – Traveled to Houston, TX

Pole Value between poles

1 to 2 12.05 V

2 to 3 11.52 V

3 to 4 11.5 V

4 to 5 2.624V

5 to 6 11.55V

6 to 7 12.02V

7 to 8 11.28V

8 to 9 11.09V

9 to 1 9.05V

Observations:

The results of the voltage drop test showed Pole #4 was shorted.

Recommendations/Conclusions:

The rotor was found with one pole shorted as described above. This condition would create a magnetic imbalance during operation thus creating a forcing function at a frequency of ~12 Hz.

From the motion amplification analysis it appears as though this forcing function excites the MG set train at a natural frequency of 6 Hz causing the increasing amplitude of the system vibration.

Base assembly should be reviewed/inspected to ensure no locked up supports or deteriorated dampers.

We thank you for the opportunity to be of service. Please feel free to contact us anytime if you have any questions or need additional service support at 800-754-5006.
