PART 1 GENERAL
1.1 DESCRIPTION
This section specifies interior room id, directional / wayfinding and regulatory signage for the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC) based on the newly developed signage standard.
The scope of this project is to provide interior signage for the building C construction project. The Contractor will be responsible for programming the sign system based on the established sign standards, preparing all submittals, manufacturing of new signs and graphics, installation, and all other associated activities for a complete project. The solution must be brand name (Continuum) or equal to function and match finishes and sizes that are in the construction drawings.
Sign system programming includes developing the final sign location plans, message schedule and drawings following the established WRNMMC sign standard. Detailed on-site walk-throughs to field verify all locations will be required by an experienced environmental graphic designer. No signs shall be manufactured until final sign message schedule and field verification has been completed by the contractor and submitted to the COR for approval. Contractor is responsible for ensuring the signage system and its installation adhere to all Federal Codes including, but not limited to, the Architectural Barriers Act (ABA), Unified Federal Criteria Design (UFC), The Joint Commission (JACO), Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF), and DoD regulations.

If providing an or equal product, please submit written confirmation the product meets all specifications in this section and the construction drawings.
1.5 DELIVERY AND STORAGE
Materials must be packaged to prevent damage and deterioration during shipment, handling, storage and installation. Product must be delivered to the jobsite in manufacturer's original packaging and stored in a clean, dry area in accordance with manufacturer's instructions. Ship signs to site only when ready for installation. Due to limited storage, WRNMMC will only provide on-site conditioned storage for signage being installed within 5 business days.
1.6 EXTRA MATERIALS

Submit warranty accompanied by the document authenticating the signer as an authorized representative of the guarantor. Guarantee that the signage products and the installation are free from any defects in material and workmanship from the date of delivery.
1.8 GENERAL FABRICATION QUALITY
a. Design components to allow for expansion and contraction for a minimum material temperature range of 56 °C (100 °F), without causing buckling, excessive opening of joints, or over stressing of adhesives, welds and fasteners.
b. Form work to required shapes and sizes, with true curve lines and angles. Provide necessary rebates, lugs and brackets for assembly of units. Use concealed fasteners whenever and wherever possible.
c. Shop fabricate so far as practicable. Joints fastened flush to conceal reinforcement, or welded where thickness or section permits.
d. Contact surfaces of connected members be true. Assembled so joints will be tight and practically unnoticeable, without use of filling compound.
e. Signs shall have fine, even texture and be flat and sound. Lines and miters sharp, arises unbroken, profiles accurate and ornament true to pattern. Plane surfaces be smooth flat and without oil-canning, free of rack and twist. Maximum variation from plane of surface plus or minus 0.3 mm (0.015 inches). Restore texture to filed or cut areas.
f. Level or straighten wrought work. Members shall have sharp lines and angles and smooth su1rfaces.
g. Extruded members to be free from extrusion marks. Square turns and corners sharp, curves true.
h. Drill holes for bolts and screws. Conceal fastenings where possible. Exposed ends and edges mill smooth, with corners slightly rounded. Form joints exposed to weather to exclude water.
i. Finish hollow signs with matching material on all faces, tops, bottoms and ends. Edge joints tightly mitered to give appearance of solid material.
j. All painted surfaces properly primed. Finish coating of paint to have complete coverage with no light or thin applications allowing substrate or primer to show. Finished surface smooth, free of scratches, gouges, drips, bubbles, thickness variations, foreign matter and other imperfections.
k. Movable parts, including hardware, are to be cleaned and adjusted to operate as designed without binding of deformation of members. Doors and covers centered in opening or frame. All contact surfaces fit tight and even without forcing or warping components.
l. Pre-assemble items in shop to greatest extent possible to minimize field splicing and assembly. Disassemble units only as necessary for shipping and handling limitations. Clearly mark units for re-assembly and coordinated installation.

This includes developing final sign location with associated plans, sign message schedule per location and detailed drawings conforming to the sign standard of each sign. Detailed on-site walk-through to field verify all locations will be required by an experienced environmental graphic designer. No signs shall be manufactured until final sign message schedule and field verification has been completed by the contractor and submitted to the COR for approval.
3.2 TYPESETTING & FINAL LAYOUTS
As part of the manufacturing process, perform final typesetting / production files in accordance with the provided graphics and sign system standards. Original vector artwork files for all standard graphics, icons and artwork will be provided to the contractor on a CD.
3.3 INSTALLATION
All installation activities shall be coordinated with the facility and construction schedules which may require a phased installation. Installation shall occur during normal business hours unless approved by the COR. The COR may request certain sensitive or high traffic areas be installed after-hours on an as needed basis.
Signs must be installed plumb and true and in accordance with approved manufacturer's instructions at locations and typical heights as show in the drawings.
Mounting height and mounting location must conform to 36 CFR 1191.
3.4 Anchorage
Anchorage must be in accordance with approved manufacturer's instructions. In high humidity interior spaces (for example, bathrooms, locker rooms, pools, trainers) and unconditioned spaces, use corrosion-resistant anchors/fasteners or with approval by the manufacturer, waterproof silicone adhesive. Anchorage not otherwise specified or shown must include slotted inserts, expansion shields, and powder-driven fasteners when approved for concrete; toggle bolts and through bolts for masonry; machine carriage bolts for steel; lag bolts and screws for wood. Exposed anchor and fastener materials must be compatible with metal to which applied and must have matching color and finish.
a. Signs mounted to painted gypsum board surfaces must be removable for painting maintenance. Signs with MDF panels shall use 50-pound minimum rated drywall anchors with #8 by 2.5” screws. Screws shall install thru pre-drilled holes in the MDF panel concealed behind the removal sign insert components. Aluminum framed signs without MDF panels shall be mounted with 50-pound minimum rated drywall anchors with #8 by 2” screws. Screws shall install thru pre-drilled holes in the sign frame concealed behind the removable sign insert components.
b. Suspended overhead signs must maintain an 84” minimum clearance to the bottom of the sign from the finished floor. Illuminated exit signs should not be blocked by ceiling signs and fire sprinkler heads should not have their spray pattern impacted by a ceiling sign. The sign should be relocated if any of these situations occur, with COR approval.
Ceiling Signs Under 20 Pounds: Shall be mounted to lay-in ceiling grids with clip connections to ceiling tees or thru ceiling grid as required.
Ceiling Signs Over 20 Pounds: Shall be mounted to the concrete roof deck with a threaded rod, threaded coupling and red head wedge anchors with appropriate weight rating. If reaching the roof deck is not feasible, mount the threaded rod or cable to a Unistrut with appropriate weight rating that spans a load bearing structural element between the ceiling grid and roof deck.
c. Install signs mounted on metal surfaces with magnetic tape.
d. Install signs mounted on fabric surfaces with hook and loop tape or pin mount.
e. Install signs mounted on glass with tape and silicone. Provide a matching back plate to conceal attachment method of sign.
f. Mount signs on masonry, stone or marble with tape and silicone unless mechanical fasteners are required for integrity of mounting. Any signs mechanically mounted to masonry, stone or marble in Building 1 must be approved prior to installation by COR.
3.5 PROTECTION & CLEANING
