B. Loosen subgrade to a minimum depth of 4 inches. Remove stones larger than 1-1/2 inches in any dimension and sticks, roots, rubbish, and other extraneous matter.

C. Spread topsoil mixture to depth required to meet thickness, grades, and elevations shown, after light rolling and natural settlement. Do not spread if planting soil or subgrade is frozen.

1. Place approximately ½ the thickness of topsoil mixture required. Work into top of loosened subgrade to create a transition layer and then place remainder of planting soil mixture.

2. Allow for sod thickness in areas to be sodded.

D. Preparation of Unchanged Grades: Where lawns are to be planted in areas unaltered or undisturbed by excavating, grading, or surface soil stripping operations, prepare soil as follows:

1. Remove and dispose of existing grass, vegetation, and turf. Do not turn over into soil being prepared for lawns.

2. Till surface soil to a depth of at least 6 inches. Apply required soil amendments and initial fertilizers and mix thoroughly into top 4 inches of soil. Trim high areas

and fill in depressions. Till soil to a homogenous mixture of fine texture.

3. Clean surface soil of roots, plants, sod, stones, clay lumps, and other extraneous materials harmful to plant growth.

4. Remove waste material, including grass, vegetation, and turf, and legally dispose of it off the Government's property.

E. Grade lawn and grass areas to a smooth, even surface with loose, uniformly fine texture. Roll and rake, remove ridges, and fill depressions to meet finish grades. Limit fine grading to areas that can be planted in the immediate future. Remove trash, debris, stones larger than 1-1/2 inches in any dimension, and other objects that may interfere with planting or maintenance operations.

F. Moisten prepared lawn areas before planting when soil is dry. Water thoroughly and allow surface to dry before planting. Do not create muddy soil.

G. Restore prepared areas if eroded or otherwise disturbed after fine grading and before planting.

3.19 DRAINAGE COURSE

A. Under slabs-on-grade, place drainage course on prepared subgrade and as follows:

1. Compact drainage course to required cross sections and thickness to not less than 95 percent of maximum dry unit weight according to ASTM D 698.

2. When compacted thickness of drainage course is 6 inches or less, place materials in a single layer.

3.20 PAVEMENT SUBGRADES

A. Construction Methods - Contractor's Option:

1. The Contractor shall have the following options for pavement subgrade preparation. Selection of the option shall be at the Contractor's discretion.

a. Lime Stabilization (DELETED BY ADDENDUM NO. 1):

1) If this option is selected, the slurry application method of lime stabilization described in ALDOT Section 232 shall be utilized without exception. Dry application method will not be accepted. Comply with all requirements of ALDOT Section 232 to ensure proper application of lime stabilization utilizing the slurry application method.

Montgomery, AL Revised 16 June 2023

EARTHWORK 312210 - 14

2) Contractor shall coordinate slurry installation with weather conditions and ensure application is accomplished in a manner that will prevent the spread of lime dust by wind or other conditions. Coordinate with Contracting Officer Representative on site to confirm required environmental conditions are met and all necessary preventative measures are in place to prevent windblown dust/debris from posing a risk to adjacent aircraft apron.

3) The properly stabilized, mixed, and cured lime sub-grade soil shall be compacted to at least 100% ASTM D-698 standard density. The optimum moisture content of the stabilized sub-grade shall be maintained until commencement of paving.

4) The volume of lime required shall be determined by laboratory testing of the final sub-grade soil just prior to the beginning of lime stabilization;

however, for budget purposes, it is estimated that approximately 75 to 85 lbs. of lime per square yard per 12" thickness of treated surface area will be required.

5) Lime stabilization is described by ALDOT Section 232-Class 2.

b. ALDOT Section 230 Improved Roadbed "Select Fill"

1) If this option is selected, the Contractor shall overexcavate and backfill pavement areas with 18" of "select fill" in accordance with ALDOT Section 230.

2) The lower 6" of "select fill" shall be compacted to 95% modified density.

3) The upper 12" of "select fill" shall be compacted to 98% modified density.

c. ALDOT Section 825 Crushed Aggregate:

1) If this option is selected, the Contractor shall over excavate and backfill pavement areas with 9" of crushed aggregate in accordance with ALDOT Section 825.

2) The crushed aggregate fill shall be compacted to 100% modified density.

2. Once a subgrade preparation method is selected, the Contractor shal utilize the same selected subgrade preparation method at all applicable applications.

EARTHWORK 312210 - 15

3.21 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL

A. Testing Agency: Contractor will engage a qualified independent geotechnical engineering testing agency to perform field quality-control testing.

B. Allow testing agency to inspect and test subgrades and each fill or backfill layer.

Proceed with subsequent earthwork only after test results for previously completed work comply with requirements.

C. Footing Subgrade: At footing subgrades, at least one test of each soil stratum will be performed to verify design bearing capacities. Subsequent verification and approval of other footing subgrades may be based on a visual comparison of subgrade with tested subgrade when approved by the Government.

D. Testing agency will test compaction of soils in place according to ASTM D 1556.

Tests will be performed at the following locations and frequencies:

1. Building Slab and Pavement Areas: At subgrade and at each compacted fill and backfill layer, at least one test for every 4,000 sq. ft. of fill area per each foot of vertical thickness placed on the building area and one per 6,000 sq.ft. in the pavement areas, but in no case fewer than three tests.

2. Trench Backfill: At each compacted initial and final backfill layer, at least one test for each 50 feet or less of trench length, but no fewer than two tests.

E. When testing agency reports that subgrades, fills, or backfills have not achieved degree of compaction specified, scarify and moisten or aerate, or remove and replace soil to depth required; recompact and retest until specified compaction is obtained.

3.22 PROTECTION

A. Protecting Graded Areas: Protect newly graded areas from traffic, freezing, and erosion. Keep free of trash and debris.

B. Repair and reestablish grades to specified tolerances where completed or partially completed surfaces become eroded, rutted, settled, or where they lose compaction due to subsequent construction operations or weather conditions.

1. Scarify or remove and replace soil material to depth as directed by the Government; reshape and recompact.

C. Where settling occurs before Project correction period elapses, remove finished surfacing, backfill with additional soil material, compact, and reconstruct surfacing.

Montgomery, AL Revised 16 June 2023

EARTHWORK 312210 - 16

1. Restore appearance, quality, and condition of finished surfacing to match adjacent work, and eliminate evidence of restoration to the greatest extent possible.

3.23 DISPOSAL OF SURPLUS AND WASTE MATERIALS

A. Disposal: Remove surplus satisfactory soil and waste material, including unsatisfactory soil, trash, and debris, and legally dispose of it off the Government's property, unless instructed otherwise by the Contracting Officer.
