DESCRIPTIONS OF USNA SPECIAL EVENTS
Categories of USNA Special Events.
Midshipmen Food Service Division classifies special events into two categories.
Mission Essential Special Events Official food-related events whose primary purpose is to benefit the entire Brigade. Usually Commandant directed. Examples include: service assignment receptions, Brigade picnics, Commissioning Week events, and Welcome Back dinners (crab feasts).
Non-Mission Essental Special Events.
Official food-related events whose primary purpose is to further the mission of the Naval Academy. This class of event, though rare, will be at the discretion of the Commandant of Midshipmen.
Types of Special Events.
Any subsistence or related service not considered a regular wardroom meal is a special event. Ranging from a simple box lunch or gear loan to something as complex as a formal class mess night, special events at the Naval Academy require great flexibility and highly developed skills in food preparation and service. Special Events quite often are high visibility, serving military and civilian VIPs. The following types of events are currently provided. The Service Provider shall continue to provide these services. The only exception is a normal athletic Pre-Meet Meal when served in an MFSD facility. This is still considered a normal King Hall meal despite it not being served at a normal meal hour nor the normal King Hall meal of the day.
Athletic Pre-Meet Meals:
These meals are served to sport teams prior to games to increase the athletes' consumption of either protein or carbohydrates. The Service Provider will be notified of the special time and menu items required for this meal. Pre-meet meals are usually served in the wardroom to teams sitting at segregated tables, but occasionally are served in the Chesapeake/Severn Room. Athletic Pre-Meet Meals are coordinated with the Service Provider by the MFSD Scheduler.
Banquets (Luncheons and Formal Dinners).
in King Hall: Any meals served in King Hall other than athletic pre-meet meals and regular brigade meals are considered King Hall Banquets. Such meals are served family-style at tables of 109 or 12.
in the Chesapeake Room: Capable of handling up to 130 guests. In general, such banquets are pre-arranged with plated, individual servings held for a minimum amount of time or plated immediately prior to serving.
in Memorial Hall: Memorial Hall, in Bancroft Hall atop the Rotunda, is the grandest facility at the Naval Academy. Memorial Hall is used for only the most formal affairs such as Giving Tree Ceremony. Seated formal dinners are generally for 125 and 150 people and are served individually, dinners being plated up in the wings immediately before serving.
Other locations: the Bo Coppedge Room in Alumni Hall, Dahlgren Hall, and Smoke Hall (up the main stairs from King Hall).
Box lunches.
A to-go lunch provided as a supplement to a King Hall meal to a group of midshipmen authorized to miss the meal by the Operations Officer approved movement order or excusal list.
Fueling Station. A room in MFSD spaces and soon in McDonough Hall where high protein items are provided to the midshipmen to help in their athletic performance.
Bulk Food Sale.
At times an organization will request bulk food from MFSD stock or something that requires preparation, such as Parade Refreshments sparkling Catawba used for dining-ins, a case of cookies for Easter Egg Hunt apples for a Halloween party, or a Navy or Marine Corps birthday cake. These requests are pick-up only, but do cost in cost of supplies and labor.
Gear loan.
A loan of MFSD equipment to a midshipmen organization. Gear loans must be paperwork supported, as the Service Provider remains accountable for all GPE. Gear loans are encouraged as a service to midshipmen. Examples of items to be loaned are tablecloths, serving utensils and, BBQ grills., punch bowls.
Picnics.
Each midshipmen company is allowed one picnics throughout per year. Extracurricular activity (ECA) groups are allowed one picnic per year. Picnics for the entire brigade are usually given twice a year (once in the summer for the plebes and once in the fall for all four classes together).
Tailgates. Food provided to the midshipmen at the home football games at the Navy football stadium Pizza Party.
As a morale booster, midshipmen squads will have pizza parties instead of King Hall lunch. This may involve cancelling their table for the day., or it may be a request for MFSD to cancel their table and prepare pizzas for the squad.
