About this file

This is a definitions document that establishes key terminology for a self-propelled howitzer modernization evaluation contract. The document defines critical components of the artillery system, including the System of Systems (integrated collection of equipment that accomplishes self-propelled artillery missions), individual systems (self-propelled howitzer vehicle, resupply system, 155mm projectiles, fuzes, and propelling charges), and supporting elements.

The definitions cover technical military terms related to artillery operations, including specific US Army ammunition types like the M795 High Explosive Projectile, M982 Excalibur Precision Projectile, and M232A2 Modular Artillery Charge System. The document clarifies operational concepts such as mobility operations and crew member requirements, while explicitly excluding tactical radios, position/navigation/timing equipment, and battle command equipment from the system scope. Notable definitions include details about vehicle requirements, ammunition specifications, and the composition of an Army battery formation.

Attachment 0001 - Definitions

Term Definition System of Systems A collection of independent systems, integrated into a larger system that delivers unique capabilities. For the purposes of this contract, the System of Systems is any combination of material that accomplish the self-propelled artillery mission of transferring artillery ammunition to a self-propelled howitzer, firing that ammunition, and achieving effects on a target. For the purposes of this contract, it does not include tactical radios, position/navigation/timing equipment, or battle command equipment. This may be interchangeably referred to as an ecosystem.

System An arrangement of parts or elements that together exhibit behavior or meaning that the individual constituents do not.

In the context of the self-propelled howitzer system of systems, typical systems could include:

- Self-propelled howitzer vehicle

- Resupply system or Resupply vehicle

- 155mm Projectiles

- Compatible Fuzes

- 155mm Propelling Charges

- Special tools or equipment necessary to support or train on the system of systems.

Subsystem A secondary or auxiliary system that functions within a larger, primary system.

Battery An Army formation made up of self-propelled howitzers vehicles and their accompanying support equipment/ammunition.

Self-propelled howitzer vehicle

A type of vehicle that is equipped with an integral field artillery armament, such as a cannon subsystem.

Resupply system A vehicle or other material solution that provides a means to take in ammunition from a supply location and load, or facilitating loading, of that ammunition into the self-propelled howitzer.

Ammunition Any projectile, propelling charge, fuze, or primer designed for use in a tube artillery system.

Projectile A projectile is an element of the system which is propelled from the self-propelled howitzer and provides lethal or non-lethal effects on a desired target. There are many different types of projectiles. High Explosive (HE) projectiles (e.g. M795) explode on/near impact and

Attachment 0001 - Definitions disperse high energy fragments to impart losses on enemy personnel or equipment. Precision projectiles include onboard subsystems which allow them to actively adjust course to hit a much more specific area; precision projectiles have a variety of lethal effects.

Vehicle A material item that can be used for transporting people or goods.

For the purposes of this contract, the vehicle shall operate over land and should be designed to allow transporting of soldier and the material required to accomplish the self-propelled artillery function.

Crew member Any human that is required to operate the system. For vehicles, this additionally includes those humans for which a space or seat is provisioned in the vehicle.

Mobility Operations For the purposes of this contract, operation of the vehicle in a manner consistent with its as-designed use where the vehicle is mobile and its armament is not actively being utilized. Examples include survivability movements (moving quickly within an area of operation) or tactical movements (moving from one area of operation to another).

US Ammunition Any ammunition that is currently in service (non-developmental, with testing and some amount of safety release to allow use by US soldiers) with the US Army. Examples include:

M82, Primer M795, High Explosive Projectile M485A2, Illumination Projectile M825A1, Smoke Projectile M982, Excalibur Precision Projectile M1156, Precision Guidance Kit Fuze M782, Multi-Option Artillery Fuze (MOFA) M739A1, Point Detonating Fuze M232A2, Modular Artillery Charge System
