About this file
This is a comprehensive construction specification document for the installation of two 500kW natural gas-powered generators at the National Museum of American History (NMAH) in Washington, D.C. The project involves replacing an aging 300kW diesel generator located on the lower level by installing new generators on the roof with integral paralleling gear on a structural steel platform. Associated work includes converting Room 4606 (existing collections storage space) into a new Emergency Electrical Room to house a switchboard, automatic transfer switches (ATSs), transformers, and panelboards; routing a new natural gas line through the building; decommissioning the existing diesel generator; and performing all structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, security, and architectural modifications required for full functionality and integration with existing systems.
The specifications cover multiple divisions of work including fire suppression systems (wet and dry pipe sprinkler systems with detailed requirements for piping, valves, alarms, and testing), plumbing (fuel gas systems with leak detection, double-containment piping), HVAC (general provisions, demolition, motors, piping/valves/fittings, equipment bases, vibration control, testing/balancing, insulation, controls and instrumentation, pumping equipment, ductwork and air outlets, air handling, and variable refrigerant flow systems), electrical (general provisions, demolition, basic materials including raceways, wiring, grounding, wiring devices, boxes, and vibration/noise control), and supporting trades. Key materials and equipment specifications include acceptance manufacturers for fire suppression (Tyco, Victaulic, Stockham, Jenkins, Reliable, Viking for valves; Tyco, Reliable, Viking for sprinklers), HVAC equipment (General Electric, Baldor, Marathon motors; Siemens controls; Mitsubishi VRF systems), and electrical equipment (Cutler-Hammer circuit breakers as basis of design with provisions for approved alternates). The project requires comprehensive shop drawing submittals, field testing including air duct leakage tests and insulation resistance tests, commissioning by independent agents, warranty periods of one to five years depending on equipment type, and detailed operation and maintenance documentation. The building will remain fully operational and open to the public during construction, requiring careful coordination of interruptions to existing utilities and life safety systems with advance notice and temporary service provisions where necessary.
