About this file
This is a comprehensive 100% construction specification document for the installation of emergency generators at the National Museum of American History (NMAH) in Washington, D.C. The project involves furnishing and installing two new 500kW natural gas-powered generators on the museum's roof to replace an aging 300kW diesel-fueled generator, with all associated structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and architectural modifications required for full functionality and integration with existing systems.
The specification document details extensive requirements across multiple divisions including general requirements, demolition, asbestos abatement, lead-containing materials work, and cast-in-place concrete. Key contractor responsibilities include: erecting temporary construction barriers and dust/debris filtration systems; installing new gas lines throughout the building; establishing a new Emergency Electrical Room (converting Room 4606); removing the existing lower-level diesel generator; coordinating work while maintaining public access to the operational museum; providing BIM models and coordination drawings; performing short-circuit studies; managing hazardous materials abatement; and executing two major switchover events from existing to temporary emergency power and then to new emergency power. Critical qualifications required include EPA-accredited and state-licensed lead abatement supervision, ACI-certified concrete flatwork technicians, competent persons in multiple disciplines with current training certifications in OSHA standards, and specialized welders qualified in restricted-space gas line welding per ANSI/ASME standards. The contract establishes a 680 calendar-day performance period with security access restrictions, extensive quality control requirements, comprehensive submittals due within 30 days of award, and commissioning of new electrical and mechanical systems with functional performance testing and integrated systems testing (black-start procedures). The project requires close coordination with the Smithsonian's commissioning agent, independent industrial hygienists for environmental monitoring, and third-party testing laboratories for material verification and air quality clearance sampling.
