About this file

This is a Draft Statement of Work (SOW) for the design, fabrication, and potential installation of access platforms for the MAGIS-100 experiment at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab), an Office of Science Laboratory operated by Fermi Forward Discovery Group, LLC on behalf of the Department of Energy. The project is currently in preliminary design phase with procurement anticipated near the end of 2026.

Five platform types are required to provide safe access to instrumentation suspended vertically in a 100-meter deep shaft for regular maintenance. All platforms must be constructed from non-magnetic materials including stainless steel, aluminum, copper, plastic/glass reinforced materials, ceramic, or titanium, as the experiment is highly sensitive to magnetic fields with a 2-foot magnetic exclusion radius around the beam tube center. Platforms must comply with OSHA requirements and include appropriate railings and toe boards. The required platform quantities and specifications include: (A) Split-level laser transport system platform (Qty 1) with upper platform 64"x68" and lower platform 64"x56", rated for 750 LB per level; (B) Ground-level platform (Qty 1) with 124"x54" dimensions and 1,500 LB capacity; (C) Atom source landing (Qty 3) with 72"x62" dimensions, 750 LB rating, and built-in ladder access hatches; (D) Atom source platform (Qty 3) with 124"x69" dimensions, 3,000 LB capacity, removable/separable parts, and enclosed cage structure with 200 LB minimum side load support and sliding panel access; and (E) Connection node platform (Qty 14) with 88"x82" dimensions, 1,000 LB capacity, and removable parts. Platforms in the middle shaft section will be accessed via suspended scaffolds or baskets secured by latches to prevent horizontal movement. All platforms must minimize gaps between platform and walls, avoid flat wall support, and allow clearance for crane cable envelopes.

Draft Statement of Work

MAGIS-100 ACCESS PLATFORMS

January 27, 2026

1. Introduction

Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) is an Office of Science Laboratory managed and operated on behalf of the Department of Energy (DOE) by Fermi Forward Discovery Group, LLC (FFDG). Platforms are needed to allow personnel to safely access designated regions of the MAGIS-100 experiment. The project is currently in the Preliminary Design phase, with procurement of the required equipment anticipated near the end of 2026. During this planning stage, it is essential to understand vendors’ capabilities to meet the specific requirements for this project. The objective is to identify vendors who can design, fabricate, and potentially install the required platforms.

The MAGIS-100 experiment consists of instrumentation that is suspended vertically along the height of a 100m deep shaft. Platforms are needed to provide access to the instrumentation so that regular maintenance can occur. The platforms located within 20ft of the top and bottom of the shaft will primarily be accessed via ladders from their respective levels. Platforms in the middle of the shaft will be accessed via a suspended scaffold supported by davits or an access basket suspended from the overhead crane. FFDG has developed a latch (stabilizer assembly) that can be used at discrete points to secure the suspended scaffold or basket to the platform to prevent movement in the horizontal plane so that personnel can safely transfer from one to the other.

Figure 1 shows the area at the top of the shaft. Figure 2 shows a plan view of the shaft with existing utilities, the approximate area where the experiment and platforms will be located, and the area that must remain clear.

2. Required Platforms

The experiment being accessed is very sensitive to magnetic fields. Because of this, magnetic materials close to the experiment should be avoided. No magnetic material is allowed within a 2ft radius from the center of the experiment beam tube (see figure 2). Some acceptable materials are:

• Stainless steel (non-magnetic)

• Aluminum

• Copper

• Plastic/glass reinforced materials

• Ceramic

• Titanium

Vendors are to specify their capabilities to provide such platforms. Platform designs must adhere to OSHA and other applicable requirements, such as toe boards and railings.

The following five platform types are needed:

A. Split-level laser transport system platform (Qty 1) B. Ground-level platform (Qty 1) C. Atom source landing (Qty 3) D. Atom source platform (Qty 3) E. Connection node platform (Qty 14)

More detailed requirements for these platforms are described in sections 2.1-2.5 below.

2.1. Split-level laser transport system platform.

• Quantity 1

• Upper platform dimensions ~64”deep x68” wide

• Lower platform dimensions ~64”deep x56” wide

• Space shall be available underneath lower platform for adjacent door access

• Space shall be available underneath upper platform for electrical box (top edge is ~96” from floor)

• Each level of the platform must be rated for at least 750 LB

2.2. Ground-level platform.

• Quantity 1

• ~124” x 54” overall dimensions

• Shall fill-in shaft space up to edge of experiment support (80” north of shaft center)

• Must have built-in hatch for ladder access

• Portion of platform north of shaft must be even with floor of building (entire platform is allowed to be even with floor)

• Refrain from supporting via flat wall

• Platform must be rated for at least 1,500 LB

2.3. Atom source landing.

• Quantity 3

• ~72” x 62” overall dimensions

• Must have built-in hatch for ladder access

• Shall be compatible with access ladders from above and below

• Must leave 36” minimum clearance above top atom source

• Refrain from supporting via flat wall

• The platform must be rated for at least 750 LB

• Gaps between platform and walls shall be minimized
