About this file
This is a Request for Information (RFI) document containing 21 questions and responses regarding the design and installation of modular platforms within a shaft at Fermilab for the FERMI experiment.
The RFI addresses structural and technical specifications for three primary platform types: atom source platforms, connection node platforms, and modular section platforms. Key details include: shaft walls are minimum 1'-0" thick cast-in-place reinforced concrete with mechanical concrete anchors (Hilti Kwik Bolt TZ2 or similar) for attachment; elevation tolerance targets are 1/2" if possible; platforms must accommodate laser-controlled area requirements with solid paneling; the atom source platforms must support approximately 2,000 lb atom sources with a footprint of 32" × 49"; and crane cable clearance must maintain +/-2 inches north-south and +/-1 foot east-west with 34'-0" floor-to-roof clearance. The document clarifies that yellow framework consists of 8020 aluminum extrusions, sub-platform areas are part of this contract, utility piping relocation will occur before platform installation, and platform walls should be removable for atom source maintenance. Regarding implementation, installation scope is optional with vendors able to provide pricing estimates or note if installation would be subcontracted; tie-off points for fall protection are required; the existing bridge crane has one hook and is rated for manbasket use; and redacted project references are acceptable for past project examples. The conceptual model will be provided to bidders, and the 48" diameter non-ferrous zone extends vertically as a full-height cylinder.

Question Response
1 What is the material of the shaft? Reinforced Concrete? Does FERMI have a proposed attachment method to the shaft wall
The shaft walls are minimum 1'-0" thick cast-in-place concrete. As-built drawings indicate the steel reinforcement varies along the shaft height. The current design concept uses mechanical concrete anchors (i.e. Hilti Kwik Bolt TZ2 or similar) attaching the end plates of steel assemblies to the shaft wall. Proof testing during installation will be needed for a percentage of the concrete anchors to verify capacity.
Will the yellow structural framework (holding the vacuum chamber) be installed before or after the platforms are installed? Does the platforms physically interface with the yellow platforms (bolted/loaded connection)
The yellow framework represents 8020 aluminum extrusions. Ideally the platforms would be installed before the experiment. The modular section platforms do not physically support the experiment. The atom source platforms may need to support the weight of the atom sources, which are approximately 2,000 lb.
2.4 Atom Source
Platform What is the elevation Tolerance in the shaft?
Vendor to provide tolerance target based on capabilities. We are seeking placement of the supports within 1/2" if possible. If the quesiton was about the shaft tolerances, we do have measured elevations and other key points for locating the top and bottom of the shaft.
2.4 Atom Source
Platform What is the purpose of the solid paneling and door? Could it be simpler even a mesh if it's to stop dropped tools?
The atom source platforms will be laser controlled areas due to the optics and laser beams involved in that area. The solid panels are a laser controlled area requirement. They are also meant to supplement fall protection when people must stand on a step stool to reach the top of the atom sources.

Figure 12 has “Gap for Crane Cable." With stacked platforms in a tube, how does this work? Would the cable hit the framing of platforms above? Or does all the framing above and deckwork need to be removable?
The top atom source platform is the closest obstacle for the crane when the cable is fully unspooled.
If we have to replace a sump pump at the bottom of the shaft, we would need to allow clearance for the cable here, but it only involves the top atom source platform, not the above framing and deckwork. We thought that, if the door slides over to the open position, the clearance should be sufficient. The upper drawing in Figure 2 is a bit of an illusion; the cable only intersects with the top atom source platform in the manner shown. For the lower two atom source platforms, we were planning to keep the same design for simplicity.
2.4 Atom Source
Platform Does the platform interface with the Atom Source? Does it carry weight of the instrument?
During installation we will like the option to set the atom source on top of the platform. It is unclear at this time if we will keep the independent wall supports for the atom source which are depicted in the model or if we will select a design which keeps the atom source supported by the platform. It doesn't nessecarily need to be set on the decking; we can set it on a subfloor or subassembly partially connected to the platform, and it would help us greatly with installation if the platform could carry the atom source's weight
Section 2.5
Connection node platform
What is the elevation tolerance in the shaft Please see answers for #3.
Section 2.5
Connection node platform
Can you clarify the crane cable envelope? Does the platform decking and underlying framing require removal?
See attachment entitled "Crane Cable Extent."
The crane hook is connected to the trolley via a single cable. In this configuration, the cable spreads out in a v-shape which is widest when the crane reaches the bottom of the shaft. Due to the various loads we normally lower down the shaft, we need some east-to-west availability, but not much north-to-south (this is taken up by the v-shape cable spread). We are seeking +/-2 inches of clearance in the north-south direction and about +/- 1ft of east-west travel. If the platform dimensions from the SOW are used, we do not anticipate the need to remove decking or framing.
However, if supporting the platforms requires additional framing, those extended regions may be subject to occasional removal. The lifting envelope defined in Figure 2 must be maintained.

Regarding the ‘stabilizer system’ I think you need a more ‘sloppy’ system that can accommodate a misaligned/unlevel basket. Tolerances on linear rails are extremely tight and misalignement is not favored
For the purpose of this RFI, we will skip questions related to the stabilizer system as that is a Fermi-provided system. For reference, testing on this system has been performed with the basket suspended at an unrealistic angle.

Characteristics of
System
Have you thought about how this system will be constructed? Is the crane rated for manbasket use? Does the crane have two independent hooks?
If the first part of this question is asking how platforms will be constructed, we expect that anchors are installed first via a suspended scaffold or other means, followed by installation of support beams; then the platform assemblies can be set onto the beams via mobile crane and affixed to them, and then the platforms are completed with safety items such as railings and gates. However, we are certainly open to alternate strategies. Yes, the existing crane is rated for manbasket use. The basket we currently use with the crane is a Lakeshore Industrial M-466 basket, but the limited range of the crane hook will not allow this to reach the curved wall where the experiment will be located.
We are considering alternatives like suspended scaffolding or a cantilever basket. The bridge crane has one hook, but we can also use a mobile crane independently for installation tasks.

System
Is there a requirement to disassemble a platform for maintenance? Compromised OSHA (Guardrail/Handrail ETC). Will this require engineered tie-off points?
Disassembly of the platform may be desired for the area immediately south of the modular section beamline to allow larger loads to be craned in the shaft. Also, the walls of the atom source platform should be removable to allow removal and reinstallation of the atom source. Tie-offs locations will need to be added in the shaft for use at each platform.

System
Have any OSHA requirements for rescue been identified? Working in pairs? Not tethering the basket to the platform to allow for lift off and return topside to load rescuers.
Fermilab's local fire rescue collaboration will be doing rescue training, but Fermilab requires a two-person rule to be used for hazardous work and hazardous environments such as this. There could be
3 people in the access system (basket) depending on what exactly is used to access the platforms.
The basket will not be tethered to the platform, only stabilized (allowing free vertical motion and constrained horizontal motion).
13 Will the conceptual model be provided to the bidders? Yes
Confirm it is acceptable to mount to the curved wall, confirm the wall is reinforced concrete, and provide a minimum thickness if known. Definitely acceptable to mount to curved wall, but not flat wall. See question 1 response for additional details.
15 Confirm the 48” diameter non-ferrous zone is projected upwards as a cylinder (full height of shaft). Yes
Provide the vertical distance from existing floor to the ceiling (both to underside of metal deck & to bottom of steel beam), confirm ceiling construction is the concrete floor slab of a level above poured over metal deck and supported by steel beams as seen in the photos.
Existing floor to top of roof structural steel (underside of metal deck) distance is 34'-0". Roof girder is W27x94 (27 inchess deep) and roof beams are W12x26 (12 inches deep). Roof construction is a 4-ply built-up roofing system over fiberboard and tapered insulation and 1.5" metal deck. See attached document "MSB Partial Original Drawings," building drawings A-12, A-17, A-18, A-19, A-23, SS-8, and SS-9.
Confirm that the Fig. 14 sub-platform area is not designed, fabricated, or installed by this contract. Sub platform area is indeed part of this contract. This is conceptual and subject to change as details are solidified. As noted in the response for question 6, the support details for the atom sources are still being developed.
Confirm that the piping shown passing through the various platforms with notch-outs, but not present in the existing condition photos, will be installed after these platforms.
Platforms will be installed after shaft utility modification work which will relocate some piping.
Model may not currently show correct position for sump lines and will be corrected before the request for proposal.
What is the distributed loading and equipment footprint for the atom source platforms? The atom source that may be placed on the platform has a footprint of approximately 32" × 49" and an estimated weight of 2,000 lb.
The RFI notes that the installation scope is optional. Should we exclude installation pricing at this stage and address it later if requested? If you could provide an estimate or range of installation pricing, that would be helpful information. If you are only willing to provide the platforms, that is acceptable and should be noted. If installation is something you would subcontract, and therefore you don't have a price for that, please note that as your method. Our goal is to determine if installation should be included or separate based on industry expertise.
For past project examples, I plan to include two highly relevant projects that are structurally similar and technically complex. However, both were completed under confidentiality agreements, so I am unable to provide the client organization names or contact details. Will this present any concerns, or is a redacted project description acceptable?
Redacted is acceptable.
