4.0 CLEANING
The precise cleaning procedures depend on the material and the adopted fabrication/assembly techniques. The procedure shall be reviewed and approved by ANL prior to cleaning components. The following cleaning procedures serve as general guidelines.
4.1 Removal of large contaminants: Large contaminants shall be removed with one or the combination of the following methods:
- Mechanical removal through scraping, brushing and wiping with clean stainless steel tools only.
- Swabbing with cloth soaked in alcohol.
- Glass bead blasting, using fresh beads (only for non-vacuum parts).
4.2 Cleaning Method: To remove dirt, oils and residue of other cleaners and degreasers wash in 2% solution of Citranox or equivalent at elevated temperature (65 °C) for 10 minutes with ultrasonic agitation and sufficient mechanical agitation to produce good fluid flow over all the surfaces.
4.3 Rinsing: Parts shall be rinsed in demineralized water heated to 35°C.
4.4 Drying: Parts shall be dried in a heated (40 °C), dry nitrogen gas flow.
Alcohol soak instead of detergent soak should be used to clean welded bellows, ferrites, feed-troughs and ceramics with brazed metal parts.
Acid or alkaline etching/pickling to remove the scale or the oxide layer is allowed only with approval in writing from ANL.
No etching other than electro-polishing, if requested, is allowed after welding or brazing.
5.0 CLEAN ASSEMBLY PROCEDURES
After cleaning, all components shall be handled in accordance with their intended use in an ultra-high vacuum (UHV) system.
The following are guidelines which should be followed to keep the components from being contaminated:
5.1 Assembly, welding inspection and packaging of the components should take place in a dedicated clean area. This area should be in a smoke and dust free environment. The clean area should be isolated from machine tools, compressors, oily and dirty parts, etc. which can contaminate the work area with hydrocarbons and dirt. Eating, drinking and smoking are prohibited in the clean area.
Beamline Components
Rev.
5.2 Clean components should be handled only with clean white nylon or cotton gloves.
Clean gloves should only contact clean parts and tools in the clean work area. If the gloves touch unclean surfaces, e.g. hair, face, chair, floor, tools, door knob, etc., they must be replaced with clean ones. Clean lab coats are needed if the worker’s arms or torso touch the components or parts.
5.3 All tools and inspection gages that contact clean parts and components shall be pre-cleaned and wiped with alcohol using lint-free cloth or paper to ensure no contamination (oil, dirt) will be transferred to the part or the inspector’s gloves. When the tools are not in use, they should be covered and stored to prevent their use on dirty parts. Tools may not be made of material that can contaminate the clean parts and components.
5.4 Work bench surfaces must be either thoroughly pre-cleaned with detergent, rinsed with water and then wiped with alcohol using lint-free, low sulfur paper or protected with clean coverings, such as clean-room grade TYVEK or oil-free Aluminum (AL)-foil. The surface must be hard and non-absorbent (stainless steel, Formica, Granite, etc.). Wood bench tops or similar materials are not acceptable.
5.5 The welded, or assembled, components shall be kept covered and ports wrapped in clean, oil-free Al-foil and protected when the components are not undergoing work or inspection.
5.6 Blowing the components with compressed gas should be avoided. If compressed gas is used, it must be dry, oil-free, and filtered.
6.0 WELDING
All components should be cleaned in accordance with Section 4.0 prior to welding. Any chemical cleaning after welding shell be non-etching type unless electro-polishing is required. Any other procedure requires approval by ANL in writing.
All welding is to be performed in a clean area and the welders must follow the guidelines specified in Section 5.1 of this specification. Therefore, clean gloves must always be worn. All jigs, fixtures and heat sinks must be clean. Oxides on welds may be removed by clean stainless steel brushes, or stainless steel or tungsten wool only. Any brush not known to be stainless steel or tungsten shall not be used. Power driven brushes, abrasive papers and abrasive wheels are not to be used.
Allowable methods for welding of components are Gas-Tungsten-Arc-Weld (GTAW), electron beam (EB) and resistance welding (only for structural welds). Exceptions must be reported to ANL for approval before work is started. All welds should be in accordance with following specifications:
- SAE AMS 2685F:2017 specification (GTAW Method), this is stabilized document
- SAE AMS 2681B -2000 (EB Method),
- AWS D17.2:2019 (resistance welding).
Exceptions must be reported to ANL for approval before work is started.

6.1 Vacuum welds
All vacuum welds should be completed within 48 hours of the cleaning. Filler metals of any kind are discouraged. Unless otherwise indicated on the drawing, all vacuum welds are to be made on the “vacuum side” of the components. Where it is indicated that the vacuum welds are on the “outside”, the welds shall have 100% penetration and the inside of the parts must be purged with Argon throughout the welding operation and cool-down of the weld. Seal-welding “both” sides of any joint is prohibited. Superimposed or overlapping welds are prohibited.
There shall be no cracks or crevices within the assembly after welding which can trap the contaminants.
The components shall be leak tight when checked with a helium mass spectrometer leak detector, as described in Section 6.0 of this specification.
7.0 LEAK TIGHTNESS
The leak detectors used shall be dry (oil free) type. The leak detector calibration must be verified with a standard helium leak just before testing of each component. No leaks should be repaired unless approved in writing by ANL. The leak detector used must be calibrated at the beginning and ending of each working shift and records of calibration kept. The Seller shall permit the Buyer to see these records, on request. The vendor shall submit a leak checking procedure for approval by ANL prior to leak checking.
Proper precautions shall be employed so as not to contaminate parts destined for UHV service with pump oil or other foreign substance. Clean rubber O-rings may be used as temporary seals for leak detection. No lubricants or greases of any kind are to be used on the O ring seals. Use of a liquid nitrogen cold trap or upstaging leak detector with an oil-free turbomolecular pump should be adequate.
All leak testing shall be accomplished at a pressure of 1 X 10-5 Torr or less, measured at the test objects. After leak checking, the components are to be vented to atmospheric pressure with filtered high purity (99.99%) dry nitrogen from bottled gas or an evaporated liquid source.
Where practical an overall leak test will be performed by enclosing the test item in a plastic bag, then flooding the volume with helium. This test shall be conducted using the most sensitive scale of the leak detector. There shall be no indications of a leak. If “bagging” is impractical, leak test can be conducted using helium jet technique upon written approval by ANL.
Vacuum leak tests shall indicate no leaks when the leak checker is set to a sensitivity of 1E-10 mbar l/s.

8.0 PACKAGING
Delicate sealing surfaces and machined features must be protected from damage and contamination. Vacuum chamber flanges and water fittings shall be wrapped with a lint-free cotton cloth, followed by aluminum foil, followed by a fitted plastic cap for protection.
Fabricated assemblies shall be shipped wrapped in bubble wrap or other suitable shock-absorbent material and placed in a wooden crate to ensure that items are not damaged during shipment. Proper packaging to ensure that deliverables are not damaged during shipment is the responsibility of the vendor. Damaged shipments are likely to be rejected by the ANL receiving department and returned to the vendor for repackaging.
