About this file

This is a Statement of Wood Origin certification document issued by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources under Act 72, P.A. 1945, required for the sale of bundled and artificial firewood at state parks and recreation areas. The document establishes compliance requirements for firewood products to prevent the spread of the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB). Bidders offering firewood for resale must certify that products were obtained from specified county sources and do not contain ash wood with bark attached. The certification requires the bidder's signature and date, along with identification of the location where products will be sold and the counties from which the firewood originated.

Michigan's EAB quarantine divides regulated areas into three tiers: Level I covering all 68 counties in the Lower Peninsula, Level II encompassing 12 Upper Peninsula counties (Alger, Baraga, Chippewa, Delta, Dickinson, Houghton, Keweenaw, Luce, Mackinaw, Marquette, Menominee, and Schoolcraft), and Protected Islands including Gogebic, Iron, and Ontonagon counties. Regulated articles include ash trees, ash materials, hardwood firewood, and any items presenting spread risk. Firewood certified by USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service bearing a compliance stamp is exempt from restrictions. Movement of regulated articles is prohibited from Level I and Level II areas without a Compliance Agreement, though articles may move from non-quarantined areas into regulated areas without restriction. Violations result in immediate removal or destruction of regulated articles at the owner's expense and are subject to criminal prosecution under applicable state law.
