About this file
Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon (RRFB) Specifications
This document is a technical specifications file for Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon (RRFB) systems to be used as flashing warning systems at roadway locations. The specification requires a Carmanah R920 Series RRFB or equivalent, complete with light bars, solar panel, batteries, system components, on-board user interface, and controller enclosure. The system must include an aluminum solar engine constructed to specifications similar to the latest Carmanah R920 Series, with integrated solar panel, internal battery and electronics mounting, and a hinged lid for access. The solar engine assembly, including batteries but excluding beacons and pushbutton, must not exceed 20 pounds. Each light bar consists of two light modules approximately 7 inches wide by 3 inches high, with side-emitting pedestrian confirmation lights on each end. The system must be mountable to perforated square sign posts or street light poles using bracket assemblies that accommodate bi-directional installation and approximately 40-degree pivoting capability.
The RRFB system must include a 15-watt solar panel and 12V 14Ah battery system with quick connections for non-proprietary battery availability. The on-board user interface must provide field-adjustable flash duration from 10 to 60 seconds in one-second increments, configurable nighttime intensity settings, and ambient brightness auto-adjustment capability while maintaining SAE J595 Class I specifications compliance. The system requires ADA-compliant pedestrian pushbuttons with LED indicators and audible tone control, hard-wired to the RRFB controller with manufacturer-supplied harnesses. Settings must be updateable wirelessly across units on the same radio channel. The pushbutton actuation logic must reset flash duration if additional presses occur during active operation and must activate the system without delay if pressed after cessation, regardless of timing since last operation.

Specifications
1. Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon (RRFB)
General For use as Flashing Warning Systems at roadway location(s). The Flashing Warning System shall be a Carmanah R920 Series RRFB or equivalent, and it will be furnished complete with RRFB light bars, RRFB solar panel, batteries, RRFB system, RRFB on-board user interface, and RRFB controller enclosure.
Mechanical Specifications
The solar engine shall be constructed from aluminum and of a size similar to the latest version of the Carmanah R920 Series RRFB. The solar panel shall be integrated with the solar engine. All batteries and electronics shall be mounted in the solar engine, with no external control cabinet or battery cabinet required. A hinged lid shall provide access to the interior of the engine. The solar engine shall be vented to provide cooling of the battery and electronic system.
The overall weight of the solar engine assembly, including batteries but excluding beacons and pushbotton, shall not exceed 20 lbs (9.1 kg).
The solar engine shall be supplied with a fixed tilt angle and shall be able to be oriented south with no additional mounting hardware.
Each light bar shall have two light modules that are approximately 7” wide by approximately 3” high. Each light bar shall include a side-emitting pedestrian confirmation light on each end.
The light bar shall be mounted to the perforated square sign post or street light pole using a separate bracket assembly to facilitate mounting two light bars back to back (bi-directional) and to allow the lightbar to pivot. The light bar shall be able to pivot by approximately 40 degrees in order to aim the light bar independent of the wire hole location on the pole.
The light bar bracket shall have both banding and bolting mounting options and shall be able to be mounted to all specified pole types.
Mounting
The RRFB shall be mounted on either a perforated square sign post or street light pole.
The size and weight of the solar engine shall be appropriate for mounting to the perforated square sign post or street light pole. The solar engine and light bar assemblies shall be furnished with mounting hardware for mounting to the perforated square sign post or street light pole.
Configuration
The solar engine shall house an on-board user interface that provides on-site configuration adjustment, system status and fault notification, and system activation information.
The flash duration shall be adjustable in-the-field from 10 to 60 seconds in one second increments.
The system shall provide configurable nighttime intensity settings.
The system shall be capable of enabling or disabling ambient brightness auto-adjustment. This feature allows the system to provide optimal output brightness in relation to ambient light levels while always maintaining adherence to SAE J595 Class I specifications.
Settings shall be able to be updated wirelessly from any unit to all systems on the same radio channel.
Solar / Battery System
The solar engine shall include one 15-watt solar panel no larger than the footprint of the solar engine enclosure and shall have a hinged top to provide access to the on-board user interface and batteries. The solar engine shall house a 12 V 14 Ahr.
battery system. Batteries shall have quick connections to facilitate installation and be readily available from multiple suppliers and non-proprietary.
Actuation/Pushbutton
The system shall be actuated by pedestrian pushbuttons that shall have an LED indicator with audible tone with Piezo control, and it shall be ADA-compliant and compliant with the latest edition of the California Manula on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (CA MUTCD).
Each pushbutton assembly shall be hard wired to the RRFB controller with manufacturer-supplied harnesses.
If an additional actuation occurs while the system is activated, the flash duration shall reset. For example, with the flash duration set to 20 seconds, if an additional actuation occurs after the RRFB has been activated for 15 seconds the RRFB will continue for an additional 20 seconds, or 35 seconds in total.
If the RRFB has ceased operation, any subsequent actuation shall activate the RRFB without delay regardless of how recently the RRFB ceased operation.
