Introduction and Scope Introduction The pulsed septum magnet for the Advanced Photon Source Upgrade (APS-U) Project will steer an injected 6 GeV electron beam into the stored beam of the Storage Ring (SR). The magnet creates a high magnetic field in the injection chamber for a short period of time while maintaining negligible field in the adjacent stored beam chamber. The pulsed septum magnet merges the injected beam into the stored beam with minimal impact to the trajectory of the stored beam.

This Statement of Work (SOW) provides details on technical tasks and requirements for the Prospective Offerors (further called “Supplier”) such as reports, documentation, schedule, change management, deliverables, and communication with Argonne National Laboratory (further called “Company”) regarding the chamber weldment for pulsed septum magnet.

Production Requirements The septum chamber weldment is an ultra-high vacuum component which requires careful adherence to all requirements for fabrication.

Material Procurement The Supplier shall be responsible for providing all materials required for fabrication of the components in accordance with the technical documents. The Supplier will submit all material certs prior to initiation of fabrication for approval by the Company. The contractor must include the part numbers of the component on all material certifications.

Fabrication Restrictions The septum chamber weldment is UHV. The Supplier is strictly prohibited from using silicone, sulfur, phosphorous, hydrocarbons, halogen, animal fats, or high molecular weight organic compounds (e.g., Naphtha, Phenol, etc.) based cutting fluids, oils, grease, and abrasives. The Supplier shall use water soluble sulfur/silicone free fluids such as Trim Sol or equivalent.

The Supplier is prohibited from using machining operations that can cause contaminants to be embedded into the surface (e.g., rolling or sandblasting). Grinding with resin bonded wheels, rouge, emery cloth, crocus cloth, or similar abrasives are prohibited. THE SUPPLIER MUST REVIEW ALL GRINDING PROCEDURES WITH THE COMPANY PRIOR TO MANUFACTURING. The Supplier must seek approval from the Company personnel for glass bead blasting, if needed.

The contractor must follow all the original flange manufacturer guidelines in the production of Conflat (CF) flanges to comply with the leak test requirements. The contractor must keep the knife edge free of damage that could cause the seal to leak. ANY NICKS OR SCRATCHES TO A KNIFE-EDGE OR SEALING SURFACE WILL RENDER THE PART UNACCEPTABLE. The flange/assembly will not be accepted if the knife edge does not meet ASTM E-2734.

Vacuum Component Certification Vacuum component test reports shall contain the signature and title of the authorized personnel who perform the tests and measurements as well as the make, model, serial number, leak check and calibration date of the equipment used. The data submitted shall also be transmitted in electronic PDF format to the APS-U technical representative.
