About this file

This is a Unified Facilities Guide Specification (UFGS) for Wick Drain System installation, prepared by NAVFAC and effective July 2014. The specification establishes technical requirements for the design, materials, installation, and quality assurance of vertical wick drain systems used to facilitate pore water drainage and accelerate soil consolidation in embankments.

The specification requires wick drains to be prefabricated composite units consisting of a corrugated plastic core wrapped with non-woven synthetic geotextile filter fabric meeting specific performance standards: grab tensile strength of 130 lb minimum per ASTM D4632, trapezoidal tear strength of 60 lb minimum per ASTM D4533, puncture strength of 40 lb minimum per ASTM D4833, permittivity of 0.7 cm/sec minimum per ASTM D4491, and apparent opening size of 210 microns maximum per ASTM D4751. Wick drains shall be installed vertically to specified depths using mandrels with static or vibratory push methods at penetration rates between 0.5 to 2.0 feet per second, with installation tolerances not exceeding 0.25 inches per foot. The specification mandates full-time geotechnical engineer monitoring, daily construction records documenting each drain's location, depth, crowd force, and as-built elevations, and submission of automated electronic measurement data if applicable. Drainage blanket material must meet ASTM C33/C33M Size 57 specifications. Measurement and payment are based on linear feet of installed wick drains below the drainage blanket top elevation, while temporary drainage systems are paid on a lump-sum basis. Acceptable wick drain manufacturers include Alidrain, Ameridrain, Mebradrain, Soil Drain, Terratest SA, and Low & Bonar BV. The contractor must demonstrate minimum qualifications of five completed wick drain projects and 1,000,000 linear meters of installed wick drains within five years prior to contract award.

<NPR>NOTE: Review submittal description (SD) definitions in Section <SRF>01 33 00</SRF> SUBMITTAL PROCEDURES and edit the following list to reflect only the submittals required for the project.

The Guide Specification technical editors have designated those items that require Government approval, due to their complexity or criticality, with a "G." Generally, other submittal items can be reviewed by the Contractor's Quality Control System. Only add a “G” to an item, if the submittal is sufficiently important or complex in context of the project.

For submittals requiring Government approval on Army projects, a code of up to three characters within the submittal tags may be used following the "G" designation to indicate the approving authority.

Codes for Army projects using the Resident Management System (RMS) are: "AE" for Architect-Engineer; "DO" for District Office (Engineering Division or other organization in the District Office); "AO" for Area Office; "RO" for Resident Office; and "PO" for Project Office. Codes following the "G" typically are not used for Navy, Air Force, and NASA projects.

Choose the first bracketed item for Navy, Air Force and NASA projects, or choose the second bracketed item for Army projects.</NPR>
