About this file
This Request for Information (RFI) log contains questions and answers related to the demolition of Buildings 1825 and 1839 at Hanscom Air Force Base. The document spans from 3 June 2025 to 10 June 2025 and addresses technical details about the demolition project, including specific inquiries about site conditions, utility removal, and project specifications. Key clarifications include confirmation that the geothermal well must be fully removed by a MassDEP-certified well driller, the bond will equal 1% of the total proposed project cost, and existing granite curbing in good condition can be reset and reused.
Detailed technical information was provided about the geothermal well at Building 1825, including its original drilling date (September 1997), total depth (650 feet), well casing specifications (schedule 40 steel, 8-inch inner diameter), and geological formations encountered during drilling. Additional questions addressed site-specific details such as communication manhole locations, concrete staircase removal, and the status of a previously listed underground storage tank, which was confirmed to have been removed long ago.

RFI LOG – DEMO B1825 & B1839
3 June 2025
1. Q: Can the 6 “ inch drain be capped and abandoned instead of removed. To avoid breaking into the street ?
A: Drain to remain refer to updated plans : B-1825 Demo plan MXRD 22-0107 V2
2. Q: Same thing with the water line. Can it be turned off, capped and abandoned?
A: Nothing to be left abandoned
3. Q: On the statement of work under 5.2.2.1 it says “Geothermal well must be decommissioned by a MassDEP certified well driller” But under 5.2.2.2 it says “Contactor must follow all requirements regarding proper removal a geothermal well” Can the geothermal well be decommissioned and abandoned with having to removed. ? Section 5.2.2.1 and 5.2.2.2 kind of contradict each other.
A: The goal is to Completely remove the Geothermal well:
The Geothermal well shall be fully decommissioned and removed in accordance with all applicable Massachusetts Department of environmental Protection (MassDEP) regulations, and the work must be performed by a MassDEP-certified well driller.
4. Q: Does the bond equal to 1% of the total proposed project cost?
A: Yes.

1. Q: I was unable to find the communication manhole "MH13D" during the site walk. Its specific location is called out on Sheet A-102 from "Attachment 9 B-1825 Demo Plan MXRD 22-0107 V2". Can the location of MH13D be confirmed?
A: Working on locating the manhole, this answer may result in a SOW addendum.
2. Q: The walkway located southeast of B1825 that runs from the parking lot to the woods has concrete staircase. Does the concrete staircase also need to be removed?
A: Yes, as marked on the demo plan A-107 : B-1825 Demo plan MXRD 22-0107 V2
3. Q: The plans do not appear to have a scale set for each page, can one be provided? When I calibrate the scale using the bar scale at the bottom, I am getting different quantities for each page on the same measurement (for example, when measuring the building area, I get 2400 SF on 1 page, but on another page I get
40,000 SF).
A: Follow the first layout A-100 for scaling, plans A-102 to A-109 (not to scale) modified to show work details without scale being adjusted.
4. Q:The grade lines do not seem to have the specific elevations they are associated with. Can those elevations be provided, or can the CAD plan set be provided?
A: Already provided all available information.

1. Q: To complete my bid for the demolition of buildings 1825 & 1839, I need some as-built specs for the geothermal well that is to be removed. I need the depth and diameter of the well. Also, can you please let me know if it is a standing column well or a closed loop well design. Please advise. Thank you.
A: Answer listed below, Building 1825, Geothermal well.
Date: September/17/ 1997, Well use: Geothermal, Method drilled: Rotary
Type: Standing column, open loop.
The Geothermal well located at Building 1825, drilled using the rotary method in September 1997, has total depth of 650 feet, with bedrock encountered 30 feet. The well casing consists of schedule 40 steel with length of 40 feet and inner diameter of 8 inches, extending 10 feet to bedrock and sealed with a protective shoe. The well is located within medium gray rock, with identified water-bearing zones of depths of 300-305 feet, 345 to 350 feet, 635 to 640 feet.
Pump test conducted on September 22, 1997:
- A pump test recorded a static water level 10 feet below the land surface with a full drawdown to 650 feet achieved after pumping at 40 gallons per mins for 1 hour. Air measurements indicated 100% full recovery after 1hour 45 mins.
Formation encountered during drilling:
- Pan material from 0-5 feet, Sand material 5-20 feet, Clay material 20-3- feet, Medium grey rock 30-650 feet

1. Q: To complete my bid for the demolition of buildings 1825 & 1839, I am looking for clarification on the spec for granite curb installation. Can existing curbing at front parking area be removed and reset or is new granite curbing required A: Old granite that is in good shape can be rest and used.
2. Q: There is a 1000-gallon #2 fuel oil underground storage tank (UST) listed on the Final Haz-ardous Materials Summary Report dated March 2024. The spec does not include the re-moval of this tank or its location. Can you please advise as to the location of the tank, amount of #2 fuel remaining in the tank and if removal of it should be included in the scope of work?
A: The tank was removed long time ago, It does not exist
