Misawa Furniture & Finishes Best Practices
Fabrics
• All upholstery materials to be healthcare grade, bleach cleanable, performance fabrics and must meet or exceed 100,000 double rubs and be PVC free, no polyurethane allowed.
• California Assembly Bill AB-2998, which prohibits the manufacturing of any upholstery containing flame retardant chemicals or additives.
• Curtains should be provided for privacy at all treatment cubicles. Privacy curtain options include an integrated silver anti-microbial fiber that permanently inhibits the growth of bacteria and fungi. This silver fiber is irreversibly bound to a polymer, so it becomes a physical part of the fiber. It is permanent, and performance does not diminish over time.
Seating: General
• All task seating and stool finishes shall be selected from the manufacturer’s standard options of paint finishes and fabrics.
• Patient room seating, office guest chairs and waiting room chairs to have wall-saver legs and cleanout capabilities.
• All upholstery materials to be healthcare grade, bleach cleanable, performance fabrics and must meet or exceed 100,000 double rubs and be PVC free, no polyurethane allowed.
• Exam room guest chair can be armless or with open arm, metal frame, wall-saver legs and non-woven upholstery on seat and back. Ink resistant and anti-microbial finishes for the upholstery are recommended.
• Only contract grade nylon, plastic, metal, or rubber glides are acceptable; select glide type based on floor type and manufacturers recommendation.
Seating: Waiting
• A variety of seating should be used and chosen according to comfort and durability, providing various styles and settings to enhance conversation and social interaction. Where space allows, add multiple seating types such as benches, settee/loveseat (which can serve as bariatric/companion seating), and seating clusters for families/large groups. Furniture in a waiting room needs to be flexible while reflecting the overall look and feel of the entire location.
• Waiting room seating to have fabric on chair backs but a non-woven upholstery is to be used on the seats – preferably with an ink resistant feature. Fabrics used in lobbies should be durable and easy to clean due to the high volume of people occupying the space.
• Waiting room seating to have open arms with solid surface arm cap.
• Chair frames to be metal or wood, any exposed wood parts are to receive a catalyzed finish system that will provide substantial infection control by properly sealing the wood – providing a finish that will be impervious to alcohol, blood, 10% bleach solution, urine and fluids.
• Wood end tables in waiting rooms to have tops that are high pressure laminate or solid surface material.
• Utilize contract grade sinuous springs in the seating cushion?
• Replacement components to be noted in the maintenance manual
