1 Introduction

1.1 Project overview

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (also referred to here as LBNL, or Berkeley Lab or

University) is a federally funded research and development center that is operated and managed by the Regents of the University of California (UC) for the United States Department of Energy

(DOE) under a prime contract between UC and DOE. LBNL conducts unclassified research to carry out its mission of reaching a deeper understanding of our world and delivering science-based solutions to problems of national significance.

Within LBNL is a soft Xray Accelerator known as the Advanced Light Source (ALS) that is currently undergoing a significant upgrade. The upgraded accelerator includes an accumulator ring (AR) and a storage ring (SR) that are housed within a structural concrete tunnel. To ensure researchers and other lab personnel are protected from any radiation released by the AR/SR, additional lead shielding is required.

1.2 Description of items

The objective of the project is to fabricate and deliver the new steel encased lead shielding panels required to address the radiation safety requirements of the ALS. This includes review of the current design for efficiency and manufacturability, fabrication/shop drawing development and submittal to LBNL and LBNL’s consultants for approval, procurement of raw materials, fabrication of the steel casings, assembly of the lead shielding, storing of materials prior to shipment, and logistics for transportation of finished lead shielding panels to the LBNL site, provide lead specifications and quality control process for LBNL to review and approve. The current design is a 95% design. After the contract is awarded, the fabrication subcontractor shall provide efficiency and feasibility review, and LBNL will provide the final panel dimensions (zero sum material change) within four weeks of the contract award.

The installation of the panels in the ALS building at LBNL will be performed by others and is excluded from this scope of work. In support of installation activities, the subcontractor shall provide storage and handling guidelines/procedures and consultation support during installation.

71 new lead shielding panels are required to upgrade the current shielding tunnel for the AR
