About this file

This is a requirements specification document for the DA2 Digital Talking Book Machine, Version 3.2, that establishes detailed technical and performance standards for the device to be procured by the Library of Congress through Solicitation Number 030ADV27R0001.

The DA2 device requirements encompass comprehensive specifications across multiple categories: copyright protection via DAISY PDTB encryption standards; regulatory compliance with ANSI/UL safety standards and FCC Part 15 Class B requirements; and physical design parameters including a maximum weight of 2 pounds, dimensions not exceeding 18.5 inches in sum, integrated handle and cartridge receptacle for NLS Digital Talking Book Cartridges, and durable external surfaces cleanable with standard household items. Hardware platform requirements mandate 32GB internal storage for downloaded media, Wi-Fi 802.11ac connectivity, Bluetooth 4.2 or later, USB 2.0 host interface supporting FAT/FAT32/exFAT file systems, and 512MB minimum RAM. Audio specifications require headphone amplifier output exceeding 60mW per channel at 32 ohms with THD+N less than 1% at 0dB, a built-in speaker capable of 2.5 Watts RMS, minimum 82dB SPL output, and adjustable playback speed up to 3x normal speed without pitch alteration. Power requirements include dual voltage operation (115V/60Hz and 220V/50Hz), continuous battery operation for at least 15 hours at normal speed and default volume (20 hours with wireless off), minimum 4-year battery lifespan to 75% capacity, full recharge capability within four hours, and automatic shutdown after 30 minutes of inactivity. Operating performance standards specify button durability through 36,500 actuation cycles, cartridge interface durability through 3,650 connection cycles, operation across 0-45 degrees Celsius, environmental resistance including UV protection, drop testing per UL 60065, vibration cycling, electromagnetic field tolerance at 3V/m, and electrostatic discharge immunity per IEC standards. The device requires extensive user-facing customization including differentiated button shapes with specific Pantone colors for play/stop, volume, application, and info functions; tactile controls with raised icons for accessibility; comprehensive Braille and print labeling specifications; and configurable audio settings including adjustable high and low frequencies and verbosity of spoken confirmation messages.
