1. Scope
1.1 System fdentification
l.l.l Battlefield Air Operations @AO) Kit is a downward-directed prognlm inteirded to deliver a system that redr¡ces fraFicide, reduces weight carried by the operator and provides interoperability.
1.1.2 BAO Kit consists of three major subsystems: l) the Human Machine Interface (HMI) is comprised of communications, lightweight pow€r generation and managemørt @G&M), computing device(s), machine-to-machine targeting/situational awareness and hr¡man input-ouþut (VO) devices. 2) the non-line of sight or Beyond Line of Sight (XLOS) s¡ntem. XLOS currently is the Ae,roVironmentWasp III small r¡nmanned aerial vehicle an 3) the BAO Kit includes the line of sight - short (LOS-S) sub-sptem.
1.2 System Oven'iew
1.2.1 The pr¡rpose of the LOS-S subsystein is to provide a ligþtweighÇ hand-held, integrated designator/s€nsor to enhance targeting effectiveness at ranges less than or equal to 3 kilometers.
This capability will be employed across the spectrum of.operations for a combat controller.
LOS-S will be employed globally in both mor¡nted (vetricle) and dismor¡nted configurations accommodating the variety of combat contoller load configurations. LOS-S will be nrggd saüsrying existing material reliability and availability requirenrents as described in the BAO Kit Incremeirt II Capability Development Docr¡urent (CDD) LOS-S Section 6. The system will be interoperable with the fielded BAO Kit. LOS-S must be small and lighhileight to accommodate dismounted operator operations and transportation.
1.2.2 The following list summarizes the s)4stem functional requirements:
o Is optimizedfor the human chassis, hrmran operation and human transportation.
o Is capable of being powered by internal pow€r and BAO Kit PG&M subslætem.
o Provides geo-location target data (display and net ready).
o Provides range oftæget(s).
¡ Designatcs/markstarga(s).
o Acquires and tracks targetG).
r Communicates target information(s) to external users.
¡ Enhances recovery operations þersonnel and gear).
r RecogFizes and discriminates target(s).
PagetoÍ12
. Digita[y records engagement - enhances assessûrent of effects application.
¡ Senses environmental conditions necessary for air operations (e.g., dropping in support equipment).
1.2.3 These fi¡nctions must be applicable across various scenariosj ingress, mission execution and egress. To accomplish this, LOS-S must be a lightrveight, all-environarent and nrgged ranging, geo-locating pointing and desþation device interoperable with the BAO Kit.
1.2.4 I\e system shall fit in or attach to the assaullstrike-sized n¡cksaok.

261ro,or greater visibility day with +l- 27m geo-location accuracy (T). Syste,m should geo-locate multiple, moving targets simultaneously, from 25m to 5km on a26kstor greatervisibility day with+/- 0.25m geo-location accuracy (O).
3.2.1.3 Perfomrance Value: Systeur shall start cold and auto calibrate (no ephemeris data and without having to reorient the unit) in less than 60 seconds. (User comment: Global Positioning System (GPS) sync can be a separaûe time if GPS is used for the solution. GPS spc time will vary based on receiver and RF conditions). Idle start (ephemeris data) less than 10 second (T).
3.2.1.4 Perfomrance Value: Afrer the system has been running, and in the event a reoalibration is required" the system shall have the ability to auto calibrate (without having to reorient the unit) within 30 seconds (T). Instantancous auto+alibration (defined as less than I second) (O).
3.2.1.5 Performance Value: All recalibration events will notifrthe user (T).
3.2.1.6 Perfomrance Value: Shall generate I geo-location ouþut every button push with a minimum of one per second (Ð. Shoutd geo-locate with a refresh rate of th¡ee solutions ouþuts per second (O).

3.2-1.7 Performance Value: LOS-S shall display the targets circular and linear error to 90 percent confidence (T); greater than 90 percent confidence (O).
3.2.1.8 Performance Value: System shall still operate (degraded mode acceptable) in GPS denied are¿u¡. (User Comment: degraded mode is the ability to set the user's coordinâtes or send it a CoT event ûom a computer or Digital Position Strike Suite to identiS where the user is. It shall be able to range and angle a target without a GPS unit. The user needs a warning or a hightight that the coordinate was pulled without a GPS fix) (T).
3.2.1.9 Perfomtance Value: System shall provide the operator the ability to manþlate, modif and annotate target data prior to transmission (annotates it as hr¡man modified or machine generated) (T).
3.2.1.10 Performance Value: SAASM GPS shall be incorporated (I).
3.2.1.11 Performance Value: System should provide operator an intemal mapping application capable of displaying geo-location points of interest (O).
3.2.1.12 Rationale: GeoJocation is necessary to effectively estimate taryetlocation and employ effects. Line of sight conditions a¡e desoribed as 0m height of operator to a?¡t heíght target and can see 5.048km.
3.2.2 LOS-S Force Protection and Strrvivability (KPP - Mandatory).

The sensor or the operaton' position should not be given away by signatnre.
3.2.3 LOS-S Materiel Availability (KPP - Mandatory).
3.2.3.1 Discussion: In accordance with CICSM 3170.01C, JROCM 120-05, JROCM 16l-06 threshold and objective value ofthe total inventory operationally capable ofperforrring ao assigned mission at a given time based on material condition.
3.2.3.2 Performance Value: One hr¡ndred thirty-six systems shall be available (for Unit T¡'pe Code (UTC) taskings).
