When making holes, chases, grooves, etc., in the masonry surface for pipe crossing, the utmost care shall be exercised to avoid damages and to keep the dimensions of the cuts to the minimum necessary. Pipelines shall be connected with the fittings by threading, full tightening and application of white lead and boiled linseed oil on the threads. Piping layout shall be such as to avoid sharp curves or chokes. Changes in pipe size shall be made with reducing fittings. Hot or cold pipe bending for the purpose of avoiding the use of fittings is not allowed. The pipes shall be installed either exposed, above suspended ceiling, in shafts or recessed as indicated on drawings. Thermal insulation for domestic water piping shall be as described in Section 15080, "Insulation of Mechanical Systems."

3.1.1 Noise and Vibration Control

3.1.2 Final Test of Water Systems

In accordance with UNI 9182, chases and grooves shall not be backfilled, and walls plastered until all piping has been cleaned and inspected for seal. Therefore, the water system shall be hydrostatically tested as pressure of 1-1/2 times the working pressure or 7 bars, whichever is greater for not less than 4 hours. Leaks noted during final test shall be eliminated by replacing the pipe or fitting. Caulking of joints will not be permitted. All tests will be conducted in the presence of the Contracting Officer’s Technical Representative, by Contractor's furnished equipment.

3.1.3 Disinfection

After pressure tests have been made, the entire domestic water distribution system shall be thoroughly flushed with water and disinfected by chlorination until all entrained dirt and mud have been removed. Fill the system with a solution containing a minimum of 50 parts per million of available chlorine and allow solution to stand for a minimum of 24 hours. Flush the solution from the systems with clean water until the residual chlorine content is not greater than 0.2 parts per million.

3.2

DRAIN SYSTEM INSTALLATION

Whatever their material may be, drain lines shall follow the shortest layout possible, compatible with the good operation of the system. Drains shall be as much as possible free of sharp changes in direction, size and reverse gradient, and shall be easy to inspect, particularly at joints, traps, etc. On the whole, the system shall be such that waste liquid material is drained away rapidly and completely without causing clogging or stagnation. All offsets shall be made of special parts. Provide seismic joint where pipe penetrations pass through exterior foundation walls.

3.2.1 Final Test of Drain Systems

In accordance with UNI 12056-1. Prior to filling chases and channels, plastering walls, constructing floor slabs, and other similar work, offsets and water drain lines shall be subjected to final test. The system shall have all openings perfectly plugged so that it may be filled with water for a 24 hour period. If no leaks, dripping, deformations, or other failures occur, especially at joints, the test results will be considered satisfactory. Subsequently, when the openings are unplugged, the water contained in the system shall run freely. In case of unsatisfactory test results, the necessary repair and restoration work shall be performed, and the test repeated until satisfactory results are obtained. All tests shall be conducted at the presence of the Contracting Officer’s Technical Representative by Contractor's personnel at no additional cost for the US Government.
