About this file
This is a Request for Information (RFI) regarding fence specifications for the "Install Security Fence BstJ" project (AWJB 25-1006), issued by the 422 Civil Engineer Squadron on 17-April-2026.
The contractor requested clarification on fence specifications, proposing a UK-standard chain-link fencing specification in accordance with BS 1722 Part 1:2006 as a cost-effective alternative to the existing BS 1722 Part 10 specification. The recommended specification includes Type 180D posts, galvanized chain-link mesh measuring 50 x 3.55 mm (with a 3.0 mm option available), a 45-degree angled extension, and three strands of high-tensile galvanized barbed wire. This specification is intended to meet the project's requirement for an 1.8m fence with cranked extension and barbed wire topping, which is less stringent than the existing 2.4m fence with 300mm burial depth. SrA May from the 422 Security Forces Squadron responded on 23-April-2026 (the specified need-by date) concurring with the recommended solution and confirming that the galvanized chain-link mesh specification meets compliance requirements under UFC 4-022-03 within the 51mm limit. Section 3 of the RFI (Review) remains incomplete with no reviewer assigned, review date recorded, or closure confirmation documented.

Project Title: Install Security Fence BstJ Project Ref: AWJB 25-1006
RFI Title: Fence Specifications RFI Ref: 001
Date Raised: 17-April-2026
SECTION 1 - REQUEST
Request By: Contractor
Addressed To: 422 CES
Description:
Considering the intended performance of the fencing, its location, and the required level of security resilience, we propose adopting a UK-standard chain-link fencing specification as a suitable and practical alternative.
For reference, the existing fence surrounding the main asset at Barford St John complies with BS 1722 Part 10, utilizing concrete posts and a heavy-gauge chain-link buried into the ground. While initially considered, this specification exceeds the project requirements, as it mandates a 2.4m height with 300mm burial depth—significantly above the requested 1.8m fence with a cranked extension and three strands of barbed wire.
Therefore, we recommend the following specification in accordance with BS 1722 Part 1:2006, which we believe provides the most appropriate and cost-effective solution:
• Posts: Type 180D (recommended)
• Chain-link mesh: Galvanized, 50 x 3.55 mm (preferred for enhanced durability; 3.0 mm option available if required)
• Angled extension: Set at 45 degrees
• Security topping: Three strands of high-tensile galvanized barbed wire
