About this file
This document is a Questions and Answers (Q&A) file related to an electrical roof remodel project at Global Strike Command, Malmstrom Air Force Base, Montana, specifically for Repair Building 1840 Roof.
The project involves installation of heat tape in all existing gutters and downspouts connected to a new heat trace control cabinet located in the electrical room. Heat tape shall be self-regulating type, Raychem GM-2XT Series, 12 watts per foot or approved equal. Circuiting requirements include 12 anticipated circuits, each fed by 30-amp circuit breakers with 30mA GFCI protection, connected via 2#8 and #10G conductors in 3/4" conduit to avoid excessive voltage drop. Heat tape must be looped down and back up each roof drain and downspout. The electrical work requires engineered shop drawings from the heat tape manufacturer detailing circuiting requirements, zoning, moisture/thermostat locations, and wiring requirements. The project also includes disconnecting and reconnecting an exhaust fan once mechanical and roofing contractors complete their modifications, with conduit and wire extensions as required. Q&A Question 38 addresses contractor inquiries regarding the specific locations of downspouts shown on elevation views and whether heat tape is supposed to be extended to the next gutter, with yellow flag notes indicating government clarification is needed on these points.

REQUIREMENTS FROM CONTROL CABINET, ZONING, AND
MOISTURE/THERMOSTAT LOCATIONS AND WIRING REQUIREMENTS.
HEAT TAPE SHALL BE SELF REGULATING TYPE, RAYCHEM GM-2XT
SERIES, 12 WATTS PER FOOT, OR APPROVED EQUAL. CONNECT
HEAT TAPE CIRCUITS VIA 2#8 AND #10G IN 3/4" CONDUIT PER EACH
CIRCUIT TO AVOID EXCESSIVE VOLTAGE DROP. 12 CIRCUITS ARE
ANTICIPATED, EACH FED BY 30 AMP CIRCUIT BREAKER WITH 30mA
GFCI PROTECTION.
LOOP HEAT TAPE DOWN AND BACK UP EACH ROOF DRAIN/
DOWNSPOUT (NOTED BY "RD"). SEE STRUCTURAL ELEVATIONS FOR
ROOF HEIGHTS AND/OR DOWN SPOUT LENGTHS.
DISCONNECT EXHAUST FAN AND RECONNECT ONCE MECHANICAL
AND ROOFING CONTRACTORS HAVE MADE THEIR MODIFICATIONS.
