About this file
This document is a salient characteristics specification for commercial wall-mounted vertical package HVAC units designed for mission-critical cooling applications in electrical switchgear and chiller plant control rooms. The target reference standard is the Bard Series or equivalent units that meet all specified characteristics.
The equipment must provide continuous, highly reliable temperature and humidity control for high-voltage electrical switchgear, variable frequency drives, programmable logic controllers, and chilled-water distribution components. Physical dimensions are strictly limited to a maximum exterior footprint of 42 inches (W) × 25.5 inches (D) × 84.8 inches (H), with supply duct openings of 10 inches (H) × 30 inches (W) and return duct openings of 16 inches (H) × 30 inches (W). The units must mount vertically to exterior walls using built-in structural brackets and operate safely with minimum front clearance of 60 inches, side clearance of 20 inches on the service side and 15 inches on the non-service side, and top clearance of 12 inches.
Mandatory technical specifications include refrigerant type R-454B or R-32 (R-22 and R-410A prohibited), minimum 11.0 EER efficiency rating compliant with Department of Energy SPVU standards, high-efficiency hermetic scroll compressor with safety switches, and internal refrigeration dehydration sustained below 1,000 microns. Air handling requirements specify a high-static, direct-drive blower with brushless ECM constant-torque fan motor capable of delivering 1,400 to 1,800 CFM against 0.5 inches water gauge external static pressure, integrated motorized commercial room ventilator with exhaust relief damper, and coil protection using copper tubes with hydrophilic aluminum fins or factory-applied anti-corrosive coating. The unit must be configured for 460V, 3-Phase, 60Hz power supply with factory-installed electric resistance heat strip sizing from 9kW to 15kW. All units require AHRI certification, UL or ETL safety listing for outdoor vertical commercial wall-mounted applications, AAMA 501.2 water-tightness verification, and factory startup validation by certified technician or manufacturer representative. Manufacturer warranty must include baseline, non-prorated 5-year parts warranty and 5-year compressor warranty upon submission of certified startup documentation.

Salient Characteristics
Commercial Wall-Mounted Vertical Package
HVAC Units Project Application: Mission-Critical Cooling for Electrical Switchgear & Chiller
Plant Control Rooms
Target Reference Standard: Bard Series Or Equal that meet the following salient characteristics.
1. Purpose & Application
The equipment specified herein must provide continuous, highly reliable, and precise temperature and humidity control to protect active, high-value, heat-sensitive infrastructure—specifically high-voltage electrical switchgear, variable frequency drives (VFDs), computerized programmable logic controllers (PLCs), and central chilled-water distribution components.
To ensure seamless procurement and prevent costly structural wall or electrical panel modifications, any proposed equivalent model must meet or exceed the absolute physical, functional, performance, and certification characteristics listed below.
2. Mandatory Technical & Performance Characteristics
A. Physical & Dimensional Compatibility (Structural Envelope)
To prevent modifications to concrete masonry, exterior cladding, or interior wall structures, any bidding unit must conform to the following exact physical footprint:
• Cabinet Envelope Dimensions: Maximum allowable exterior footprint of
42 in. (W) × 25.5 in. (D) × 84.8 in. (H) (±0.5 inches).
• Duct Location & Spacing: Air supply and return openings must align perfectly with standard wall sleeves without the use of adapters, offsets, or transition ductwork:
• Supply Duct Opening: Nominally 10 in. (H) × 30 in. (W). (±0.5 inches)
• Return Duct Opening: Nominally 16 in. (H) × 30 in. (W). (±0.5 inches)
• Mounting Configuration: Vertical exterior wall-mount package chassis utilizing built-in structural side-mounting brackets designed to bolt directly to exterior walls.
• Cabinet Clearances: The unit must be certified to operate safely and maintain full performance capacity under the following tight spatial restrictions:
• Front Clearance: Minimum 60 inches (5 feet) of unobstructed outdoor air throw.
• Side Clearance: Minimum 20 inches on the access/control panel side and
15 inches on the non-service side.
• Top Clearance: Minimum 12 inches beneath building soffits, overhangs, or architectural projections.
B. Refrigeration & Environmental Specifications
• Refrigerant Type: Must utilize R-454B (or modern, low Global Warming
Potential A2L-classified safety refrigerant R-32 can be utilized). Legacy R-22 or high-GWP R-410A refrigerants are strictly prohibited.
• System Efficiency: Minimum 11.0 EER (Energy Efficiency Ratio) complying with the Department of Energy's Single Package Vertical Unit (SPVU) commercial energy standard.
• Compressor Type: High-efficiency hermetic scroll compressor with integrated internal thermal overload protection, high-pressure cut-out switch, and low-pressure safety switch.
• Moisture Dehydration Tolerance: Internal refrigeration loop must be clean, tight, and dehydrated to sustain a standing vacuum below 1,000 microns for a minimum of 15 minutes with the vacuum pump completely isolated (decay test).
C. Air Handling & Ventilation
• Blower Assembly: High-static, direct-drive blower powered by a brushless, programmable ECM (Electronically Commutated Motor) constant-torque fan motor.
• Volumetric Airflow Output: Capable of delivering a continuous range of
1,400 to 1,800 CFM (nominal 350 to 450 CFM per ton of capacity) against an
External Static Pressure (ESP) of up to 0.5 inches water gauge (in. w.g.).
• Ventilation Damper: Integrated motorized commercial room ventilator (CRV) with built-in exhaust relief damper to introduce outdoor air and balance space pressure.
• Coil Environmental Protection: Evaporator and condenser coils must utilize copper tubes with hydrophilic aluminum fins, or be treated with an industrial-grade, factory-applied anti-corrosive coating to resist dirt, grime, and industrial atmospheric moisture.
D. Electrical & Heating
• Power Supply Voltage & Phase: Must terminate directly to existing branch circuits. The contractor must verify and deliver units configured to match the exact field voltage and phase:
460V, 3-Phase, 60Hz
• Integrated Heat Kit: Factory-installed electric resistance heat strip assembly.
Sizing must match field capacity requirements as verified during the pre-construction inspection (ranging from 9kW to 15kW).
3. Mandatory Quality Standards & Certifications
Every unit supplied must possess the following national listings, certifications, and support structures:
• AHRI Certified: Performance and capacity metrics must be certified in accordance with the Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute
(AHRI).
• Safety Listing: UL (Underwriters Laboratories) or ETL (Intertek) safety listed for outdoor vertical commercial wall-mounted application.
• Water-Tightness Verification: Construction and seals must be certified to withstand localized, high-velocity wind-driven rain testing in accordance with
AAMA 501.2 standards without showing interior moisture ingress.
• Factory Startup Validation: The equipment's internal engineering must be fully compatible with, and eligible for, standard manufacturer warranties when commissioned, documented, and co-signed on-site by a factory-certified technician or direct manufacturer's representative.
• Warranty Support: Manufacturer must provide a baseline, non-prorated 5-year parts warranty and 5-year compressor warranty upon submission of the certified startup log.
