About this file
This document provides the basis of design for a proposed 20-bedroom Fisher House prototype. Key details include that the design maintains the core concept of a traditional American one-family house layout with a center hall, living room, dining room, kitchen and family room, along with two six-bedroom wings. Life safety features are enhanced with two two-hour fire rated enclosed staircases, two two-hour fire rated enclosed egress corridors on the first floor with outside exits at both ends, and three-quarter hour fire-rated doors for the eight second floor bedrooms. The open stair is separated from the first floor corridors by two two-hour fire rated smoke/fire curtains actuated by smoke detectors. The solicitation seeks life safety corrections to Fisher House 1 in accordance with codes including IBC 2006, NFPA standards, and NEC. The solicitation was issued by the Department of Veterans Affairs Veterans Health Administration VISN 21.

PROPOSED FISHER HOUSE
PROTOTYPE
20 BEDROOM HOUSE
BASIS OF DESIGN
OCTOBER 2011
History
From the beginning the houses were designed as a home away from home, based on the “Traditional American One Family House”. This core concept is the primary reason that the “Families” respond so well to the house (home) environment.
Although the fundamental design of the houses is based on a large one family wood frame type house, there are supplemental Life Safety design features which respond to the unique nature of the house which include; Automatic Sprinkler System, Fire Alarm System, including Smoke Detectors in all rooms with Smoke Detectors/Strobes in all common areas, Emergency Lighting System and Fire Extinguishers. The Fisher House Foundation has sort to improve the design of the houses throughout the development of the Program and will continue to make improvements in the future.
Proposed Fisher House
The Proposed 20 bedroom Fisher House design remains true to the core concept of the “Traditional American One Family House”. The floor plan layout is based on a center hall design with a living room, dining room, kitchen and family room in the center area and two 6 bedroom wings one on each side. At the end of the main entrance center hall is the elevator and open stair leading to the 2nd floor (8) bedrooms. In general the “Core Concept” and fundamental design including the occupancy classification have been maintained. However the supplemental Life Safety features now include the following:
1. Two 2HR Fire Rated enclosed Fire Stairs, one leading directly to the outside and one leading to an Egress Corridor on the first floor.
2. Two 2HR Fire Rated enclosed Egress Corridors on the first floor with exits on both ends leading directly to the outside. The Egress Corridors separate the first floor of the center area from the two 6 bedroom wings.
3. The second floor (8) bedrooms will be equipped with 3/4HR FPSC entrance doors.
4. The open stair will be separated at the first floor corridors by two 2HR Fire Rated Smoke/ Fire Curtains actuated by smoke detectors. Also a fixed smoke curtain across the front open side at the ceiling (18”deep) will be included.
5. In addition to the Automatic Sprinkler System (NFPA 13R) throughout the house, the living room, dining room and center hall (T shape) will be protected by sprinklers in accordance with NFPA 13.
Please refer to the diagrams that follow for the specific features.
