About this file

This document outlines test requirements for currency cash pak packages. It specifies that any suitable apparatus may be used to conduct free fall drop tests of packages from heights of three feet and eight feet onto various surfaces and orientations. The tests require that packages not sustain tears larger than one inch or multiple tears greater than half an inch when subjected to the drops. Package seals must remain intact, and a success rate of at least 90% is desired, with less than 75% constituting failure.

The related federal contract opportunity is a solicitation from the Department of the Treasury Bureau of Engraving and Printing for proposals regarding a cash pak system. No further details are provided on the solicitation requirements or terms.

BUREAU OF ENGRAVING AND PRINTING

Free Fall Drop Test

Apparatus. Any suitable apparatus or method may be used that conforms to the following requirements:

1) Permits the package to be placed in a position prior to release that will assure free unobstructed fall to impact the package at the orientation and in the direction required.

2) Permits accurate and convenient control of the height of the drop.

3) Utilizes lifting devices or methods that will not damage the package.

4) Provides an instantaneous release mechanism.

5) Provides a rigid and level surface with a solid mass of concrete, steel, or stone sufficient to absorb all shock without displacement.

Procedure.

1) Raise one currency Cash-Pak package to three feet. Release package and allow dropping freely onto one flat face and onto one side and one edge (3 separate drops of the same package).

2) Raise the same package as in step 1. Release package and allow dropping without obstruction onto two corners, one on each end of the package. (2 drops)

3) Raise the same package to three feet above a pallet. Release package onto a corner edge of the pallet.

4) Raise package to eight feet and allow dropping.

Results.

The packages shall not sustain a tear of more than one (1) inch in length or multiple tears of one-half inch or more when subjected to the above tests. The seals of the packages shall remain intact. A success rate of ninety (90) percent or greater of the packages tested is desired. A success rate of less than seventy-five (75) percent is a failure.
