About this file

This document is a geotechnical investigation report containing piezo boring logs and laboratory test results for the Eastern Oregon University (EOU) West Steam Tunnel System Improvements project in La Grande, Oregon. The report documents two boreholes (B-1 and B-2) drilled on July 18, 2022, by Western States Soil Conservation, Inc., using mud rotary boring methods with a 4 7/8-inch diameter boring bit. Both boreholes were completed to depths of approximately 25 feet and included the installation of 2-inch Schedule 40 PVC well casing with 0.020-inch slot width screens set at 25.0 feet and 24.5 feet respectively, topped with flush-mount monuments and concrete surface seals. The boring logs identified subsurface soil conditions consisting of fill materials near the surface transitioning to very dense gravels with silt and sand at depth, with moisture content percentages ranging from 7 to 18 percent.

Laboratory analysis of samples from both boreholes included grain-size testing and Atterberg limits determinations. Boring B-1 samples from 7.5 feet and 20.0 feet depths showed P200 values of 11 percent and 15 percent respectively, while Boring B-2 samples from 10.0 feet and 20.0 feet depths exhibited P200 values of 20 percent and 9 percent respectively. The grain-size analysis indicated that soils at both locations consisted primarily of gravel and sand with varying percentages of silt and clay components. This subsurface investigation provides critical geotechnical data to support the design and construction planning for the steam tunnel system improvements, including the selective demolition, trenching, backfill, and new distribution piping and vault installation planned for the project.
