Requirements
1. Introduction
Microsoft made an official announcement that the end-of-life and end-of-support for Windows XP SP3 is in 2012. Windows XP SP3 is the current Desktop Operating System (DOS) deployed on the Employee Computer Network (ECN). If the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Administration and Management (OASAM) Information Technology Center (ITC) takes the approach of not upgrading the DOS, OASAM-ITC will not be able to meet the Departmental goals of: collaboration, Green IT, and providing a secure DOS platform.
The existing semi-automated deployment methodology of the DOS is lengthy, which is limiting OASAM-ITC’s ability to install a large number of desktops and laptops.
This project requests professional IT services be provided to use automated procedures and tools to deploy the Windows 7 Operating System on the ECN.
2. Background
a. Current Technical Challenge
The current technical limitations of the Windows XP DOS are:
1. Does not provide the ability to fully control the DOS. Users are able to bypass existing controls and are able to install 3rd party applications
2. Does not provide the ability to use extended power management controls
3. Provides limited Group Policy (GPO) management
4. Inability to apply critical operating system patches to remote users computers because computers get disconnected over VPNDoes not have a built-in disk encryption
It is anticipated that the deployment of Windows 7 as the new DOS will mitigate the above limitations and issues
b. Desired Desktop Operating System Core Load Configuration OASAM-ITC has developed a desired configuration for the new DOS which includes:
